Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Sunset

I handed the documents to my mother, watching as she read through the clean, undisputed legal title of the house—her name, and her name alone, inscribed on the deed without a single flaw or encumbrance.
Tears welled up in Mom’s eyes, but this time, they were tears of pure, unadulterated joy. She set the papers down gently on the counter and wrapped her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder.
"We won, baby," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "We finally won."
"We didn't just win, Mom," I whispered back, looking out the kitchen window toward the garden where the morning sun was casting a golden glow over the flowers. "We took back our lives."
That evening, we didn't host a grand, pretentious dinner party for fake friends and social climbers. There were no country club judges, no arrogant socialites, and no abusive leeches hiding in the shadows.

We sat out on the backyard patio under a canopy of twinkling string lights, eating homemade peach cobbler, laughing until our stomachs hurt, and watching the sun set in brilliant shades of orange and purple.
Vanessa and Brandon thought they could break us, erase us, and treat us like dirt beneath their feet. They thought their lies and forged papers were impenetrable.
