Chapter 3 - The Grand Entrance

Downstairs, the dining room glittered under the harsh glow of crystal chandeliers. Vanessa had spared no expense, transforming my living room into a showcase of superficial wealth. Prominent local businessmen, country club elites, and neighborhood gossips laughed over flutes of champagne, completely oblivious to the trauma unfolding just feet away in the laundry room.
My mother stood in the corner of the kitchen, her eyes cast downward, clutching a damp rag. Her cheek was still bright red and swollen where Vanessa had struck her.
I walked up to her, gently taking the rag from her trembling hands. I pulled out my own silk handkerchief and pressed it softly against her bruised face.
"Mom, look at me," I said softly, my voice steady. "It’s going to end tonight. Every single bit of it."
She shook her head frantically, tears spilling over her wrinkled eyelids. "No, Chloe, please... they have powerful friends. The judge at table two, Mr. Harrington, is Brandon's boss. They'll ruin us. Just let it go."
"I never let a patient die on my watch, Mom. And I'm not letting you die either."
Before she could reply, Vanessa glided into the kitchen, her diamond-encrusted tennis bracelet flashing under the lights. She snatched a tray of canapés from the counter, shooting me a venomous glare.
"Chloe, put on that black dress I left on the folding bed," Vanessa hissed under her breath. "If you're going to stay, you're serving drinks. Act like the maid your mother is, or get out."
She turned on her heel and glided back out to her guests, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor.
I looked down at the simple, elegant black trousers and blouse I had traveled in. I didn't change. Instead, I pulled my phone from my pocket and sent a single text message to a number saved under 'Special Ops - Legal.'
‘Target acquired. Proceed to the front gates.’
I walked out into the dining room, holding a silver tray loaded with champagne flutes. The room was loud with chatter, Vanessa standing at the head of the table holding court, basking in the artificial adoration of her wealthy guests.
"Oh, this magnificent estate?" Vanessa laughed musically, swirling her wine glass as she addressed the table. "Well, building a real estate empire takes vision. Brandon and I poured our hearts into acquiring this property. Honestly, buying out my simple-minded mother-in-law and upgrading the entire estate was a project, but a visionary must create her own canvas!"
A chorus of flattering murmurs rippled through the table. Mr. Harrington, the influential local judge, raised his glass. "To Vanessa—a woman who knows how to claim what she deserves."

I stepped directly behind Vanessa, my face a mask of serene calm. As she turned to accept the praise, I tilted the silver tray, sending a cascade of expensive champagne directly down the front of her designer white dress.
Vanessa shrieked, jumping backward as the cold liquid soaked into her expensive fabric. "What is wrong with you, you clumsy, useless idiot!" she screamed, her pristine mask of sophistication shattering instantly in front of all her elite friends.
