Chapter 4 - The Public Humiliation

The entire dining room went dead silent. The champagne flutes froze halfway to mouths. Dozens of pairs of eyes snapped toward Vanessa, whose face was now contorted in an ugly, incandescent rage.

For a brief second, Vanessa tried to laugh it off, though her voice trembled with venom. "Well... as you can see, hiring inexperienced help from the rural provinces is always a gamble. This clumsy girl doesn't even know how to hold a tray."

She turned on me, raising her hand high into the air, ready to deliver a vicious slap across my face just as she had done to my mother earlier that afternoon.

"You insolent little trash!" Vanessa shrieked, her palm hurtling toward my cheek.

I didn't flinch. I didn't duck.

Before her hand could make contact, my fingers shot out like lightning, gripping her wrist with a crushing, clinical strength. Years of restraining violent ICU patients gave my grip an unyielding, iron-like power. Vanessa gasped, her eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated shock as she tried to pull her arm back, but my hand didn't budge an inch.

"Keep your hands to yourself, Vanessa," I said, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade.

"Let go of me right now!" Vanessa shrieked, her face turning a mottled shade of purple. "Brandon! Brandon, get this psychotic maid out of my house! Call the police! She’s trespassing!"

Brandon pushed his chair back from the table, his face flushed with embarrassment and anger. He strode over, pointing a trembling finger at my chest. "Chloe, you have lost your absolute mind. This is Vanessa’s house. You have zero rights here. Get out before I have you physically thrown into the street!"

Mr. Harrington, the judge, stood up slowly, adjusting his jacket with an air of judicial authority. "Young lady," he said, his voice deep and stern, "I happen to be a personal friend of the owners of this property. Assaulting the hostess and trespassing on private estate grounds is a felony. I suggest you drop her wrist immediately, or I will personally ensure you spend the next five years behind bars."

A murmur of agreement rose from the guests. They looked at me with open disgust, whispering behind their napkins. Brandon smirked, crossing his arms.

I let go of Vanessa’s wrist with a sharp shove that sent her stumbling back against the dining table, rattling the crystal silverware.

"Private estate grounds?" I asked, a cold smile touching the corners of my lips. "Interesting choice of words, Judge Harrington. Because according to the county land registry, you're currently standing on property owned exclusively by Chloe Nguyen."

Brandon scoffed loudly. "Are you delusional? The deed is in Vanessa's name! We have the papers right in our safe upstairs!"

"You mean the papers you forged using a fake, expired power of attorney?" I asked smoothly, pulling a crisp, stamped official document from inside my jacket. "Because last time I checked, federal wire fraud and forgery carry a much harsher sentence than trespassing."
