Chapter 5 - The Files Come Out

Vanessa recovered her balance, her chest heaving as she let out a harsh, hysterical laugh. "Oh, please! Anyone can print fake papers off a home computer! Brandon, security! Throw her out!"

"There is no security coming, Vanessa," a calm, deep voice echoed from the front foyer.

Heavy, authoritative footsteps clicked against the tile floor. Two uniformed police officers, flanked by a tall, sharp-suited man carrying a heavy leather briefcase, stepped into the dining room. The room’s temperature seemed to drop ten degrees instantly.

Brandon’s face instantly drained of all color. His mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "Off... Officer? There must be some mistake. This is a private dinner party—"

The lead officer ignored Brandon entirely. He walked past the terrified guests and stopped directly in front of me, giving a crisp, respectful nod. "Nurse Nguyen. We received your digital package and asset verification report. State forensics unit and the district attorney's investigator are already securing the perimeter."

The sharp-suited man carrying the briefcase stepped forward, opening it to reveal an official seal. He introduced himself loudly so every single guest at the table could hear: "My name is Arthur Pendelton, senior prosecutor for the State Financial Crimes Division. We have warrants to search this residence and execute immediate asset restitution for mortgage fraud, elder abuse, and identity theft."

Absolute pandemonium erupted at the dinner table. Country club members stood up in panic, knocking their chairs backward. Whispers of scandal buzzed through the room like a swarm of angry hornets.

Vanessa’s knees buckled. She grabbed onto the edge of the dining table for support, her carefully sculpted facade completely collapsing into a puddle of panic. "No... no, this is a mistake! Brandon told me the house was ours! He said his sister was a nobody working overseas who would never come back!"

Brandon stared at me in sheer horror, his voice cracking. "Chloe... Chloe, please. We're family! We can talk about this! You can't do this to your own brother!"

"My brother died the day he watched his wife slap our sixty-six-year-old mother across the face," I answered, my voice ringing clear and hard across the room.

Judge Harrington’s face turned grim as he stared at Brandon and Vanessa. He looked down at the documents handed to him by the prosecutor, his eyes widening in professional disbelief. "Good God... the signatures on these quitclaim deeds are blatant forgeries. Brandon, you signed your sister's name and notarized it with a fraudulent stamp. You didn't just steal a house; you committed federal felonies."
