Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

"Not just forgery, Judge," a quiet, trembling voice spoke from the doorway of the kitchen.

We all turned. My mother stood there, leaning against the doorframe. The dark purple bruises on her arms were partially visible beneath her rolled-up sleeves, and the red mark of Vanessa’s hand still faintly stained her cheek. But for the first time in two years, her back was straight, and her eyes were filled with unyielding fire.

She walked slowly into the center of the dining room, stepping past the shocked guests who parted for her like water.

"Mom... don't," Brandon stammered, sweating profusely now. "Don't listen to her, she's senile—"

"I am not senile, Brandon," my mother interrupted, her voice steady and echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "For two years, you and your wife treated me like a slave in the home my daughter bought for me with her sweat and blood. You took my bedroom, you stole my retirement checks, and every time I dropped a plate or forgot to polish your shoes, Vanessa struck me across the face while you turned your back and looked away."

Gasps echoed through the room. Several female guests looked at Vanessa with undisguised horror and disgust.

Vanessa’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. "You lying old hag! Prove it! You have no proof of any abuse!"

"Actually, Vanessa, ICU nurses are trained to document biological and physical trauma," I said, stepping forward and tapping my temple. "When I arrived yesterday, I didn't just check the safe. I installed hidden security cameras in the kitchen and the hallways, linked directly to cloud storage that your amateur Wi-Fi blocker couldn't touch."

I pulled out my tablet, tapped the screen, and pressed play.

Instantly, the crisp audio and high-definition video of yesterday afternoon filled the dining room. The sound of the plate shattering echoed from the speakers. Then came Vanessa’s shrill voice: "You useless old woman!"—followed by the sickening, sharp slap across my mother’s face, and Brandon walking away without a word.

The video played on loop for a few agonizing seconds before I paused it.

The silence in the dining room was absolute. You could hear a pin drop on the hardwood floor.

Mr. Harrington slammed his wine glass down on the table, his face dark with fury. "As a judge of this county, I have never witnessed such monstrous, sociopathic behavior in all my years on the bench. Officer, arrest them both immediately."
