Chapter 7 - The Arrest

Brandon lunged forward like a cornered animal, but the two police officers were already on him. They grabbed his arms, twisting them behind his back and snapping the steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

"Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am? I'm a respected businessman!" Brandon shrieked, kicking his legs as they dragged him toward the front door.

Vanessa dropped to her knees, clutching at the hem of the prosecutor’s suit jacket, wailing hysterically. "Please! Please don't take me! It was all Brandon's idea! He forced me to do it! Have mercy!"

Arthur Pendelton looked down at her with clinical detachment, gently pulling his jacket away from her manicured fingers. "Mercy is something you should have shown an elderly woman in her own home, Mrs. Nguyen. Save your tears for the magistrate."

The officers hauled Vanessa to her feet, her designer dress dragging across the floor as they led her out past the stunned crowd of elite guests. The country club members couldn't escape fast enough; murmuring among themselves, they grabbed their coats and scurried out the front doors, eager to distance themselves from the catastrophic social and legal collapse unfolding before their eyes.

Within ten minutes, the grand dining room was empty of guests, replaced only by police investigators, forensic accountants, and the quiet hum of legal machinery going to work.

I walked over to my mother, gently wrapping my arms around her frail shoulders. She buried her face in my shoulder, finally letting out all the tears she had held back for two agonizing years.

"It's over, Mom," I whispered into her hair, kissing the top of her head. "You're safe now. No one will ever hurt you in this house again."

She clutched the fabric of my shirt tightly, her shoulders shaking with relief. "Thank you, my brave girl... I thought I would die in that laundry room."

"Never," I said firmly, looking out the massive front windows where the police cruisers flashed their red and blue lights against the manicured lawn. "This house is yours. And justice has finally arrived."
