CHAPTER 1 – THE WOMAN EVERYONE CALLED A KILLER

"I didn't kill him!"

Emily Carter screamed those words until her voice disappeared.

Nobody listened.

The courtroom had already decided her fate long before the trial began.

The prosecutors called her a cold-blooded murderer.

The newspapers labeled her "The Black Widow of Riverside."

Even strangers spat at her as deputies led her away in handcuffs.

Only one person kept shouting from the back of the courtroom.

Her eleven-year-old son.

"Mom! I know you didn't do it!"

The guards dragged the crying boy away while Emily watched helplessly.

That was the last time she ever saw him.

Six months earlier...

Emily's life had been ordinary.

She worked double shifts as a nurse.

Her husband, Michael Carter, owned a small construction company.

Money was tight, but they loved each other.

Or at least...

She thought they did.

Everything changed on a rainy Thursday night.

Emily returned home after an exhausting sixteen-hour shift.

The front door was unlocked.

The lights were off.

The house felt strangely silent.

"Michael?"

No answer.

She stepped into the living room.

Something sticky touched her shoe.

She looked down.

Blood.

A trail of blood stretched toward the kitchen.

Her heart nearly stopped.

She followed it.

Michael lay on the floor...

A kitchen knife buried deep in his chest.

Emily dropped to her knees in horror.

"No... no... Michael!"

She pulled the knife out instinctively, trying to save him.

That single desperate mistake destroyed her life.

Police arrived less than four minutes later.

They found her kneeling beside the body.

Covered in blood.

Holding the murder weapon.

Every fingerprint on the knife belonged to her.

There were no signs of forced entry.

No witnesses.

No surveillance footage.

Only one suspect.

Emily Carter.

The detectives ignored everything she said.

"I just got home!"

"I tried to help him!"

"I loved my husband!"

The lead detective simply looked into her eyes.

"You rehearsed that speech, didn't you?"

Emily realized then...

She wasn't being questioned.

She was already convicted.

The trial became national news.

Television hosts called her manipulative.

Social media demanded the death penalty.

Former friends refused to testify for her.

Even Michael's family swore she had married him only for money.

Then came the final blow.

The prosecutor revealed that Michael had secretly increased his life insurance policy to five million dollars only two weeks before his death.

The jury gasped.

Emily had never known such a policy existed.

But nobody believed her.

After only three hours of deliberation...

The verdict arrived.

"Guilty."

The judge slowly removed his glasses.

"Emily Carter... I hereby sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."

The courtroom erupted in applause.

Only Emily remained silent.

As deputies escorted her away, she turned one last time.

Her son's seat...

Was empty.

She whispered to herself,

"One day...

Someone will discover the truth."

She had no idea...

May you like

The truth was already hiding much closer than anyone imagined.
