CHAPTER 8 – THE TRUTH INSIDE THE BLACK FILE

The tunnel stretched for nearly a mile beneath the city.

When they finally emerged, dawn was breaking over Riverside.

A black pickup truck waited beneath an old railway bridge.

Inside sat a young man wearing a baseball cap.

The moment Emily saw his eyes...

Time stopped.

"Noah..."

The young man slowly removed his cap.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Hi, Mom."

Emily ran toward him.

For ten years she had dreamed of this moment.

She wrapped her arms around him, unable to speak.

Neither of them noticed Ava quietly wiping away tears.

Finally Noah whispered,

"I told you I'd find you."

Emily touched his face as if afraid he would disappear.

"They told me you forgot me."

"They lied."

"They said you hated me."

"They lied about everything."

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Noah opened a weathered backpack.

Inside was a thick black folder.

Across the front were two words.

PROJECT RAVEN

Emily slowly opened it.

Every page revealed another nightmare.

Bribed judges.

Paid prosecutors.

Fabricated DNA reports.

Witnesses who had vanished.

Politicians on secret payrolls.

Police officers who altered crime scenes.

And one document stopped Emily's heart.

It was Michael Carter's final letter.

Written only hours before his death.

Emily... if you're reading this, I failed.

I found proof that Raven has controlled this city for decades.

If anything happens to me, never trust Thomas.

Emily's hands began shaking.

Thomas.

Her own brother.

She turned the page.

Attached was a family photograph taken twenty-eight years earlier.

A smiling little boy stood beside a wealthy businessman.

On the back someone had written:

"Adopted by the Reed family – Future Successor."

Emily stared in disbelief.

The little boy wasn't Thomas Reed.

It was...

Judge Malcolm Pierce.

The judge who sentenced her.

Noah looked at his mother.

"It gets worse."

He handed her the final page.

It contained only one photograph.

An elderly man standing beside Warden Helen Voss...

And behind them...

A smiling Thomas Reed.

All three wore identical silver raven pins.

At the bottom of the page was one handwritten sentence.

FOUNDERS OF PROJECT RAVEN

Emily's entire world collapsed.

Her husband hadn't been killed by one corrupt man.

He had uncovered an organization that had quietly ruled the city for over thirty years.

And now...

Every member of Raven knew one thing.

Emily Carter was alive.

She had escaped.

And she possessed the evidence that could destroy them all.

Far away, inside a luxurious mansion overlooking the city, an elderly billionaire watched security footage of Emily embracing Noah.

He smiled calmly.

Then he spoke five chilling words to the men around him.

May you like

"Bring me Mrs. Carter... alive."
