Chapter 13 - The Silver ThreadI didn't run up the stairs; I flew.

My heart was hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird, each beat screaming a warning I had ignored for seven long years. Behind me, I could hear Kai’s heavy, rapid footfalls and Lev bark orders to the security team to lock down the master wing.
I burst into the master suite. The room was bathed in the soft blue glow of the nightlights. Lily was curled up in the center of the massive bed, her thumb tucked near her lips, fast asleep. Her silver locket lay on the white silk pillow beside her cheek, catching the faint light from the window.
I dropped to my knees beside the mattress, my hands shaking so violently I could barely function.
"Maya, gentle," Kai whispered, stepping up beside me, his voice steadying my spiraling panic. "Don't scare her."
I reached out, my trembling fingers carefully pushing back the soft, fine hair at the nape of Lily’s neck.
Under the dim blue light, right at the base of her skull where her hairline met her neck, was a microscopic, pale white scar—no larger than a grain of rice. It was so faint, so perfectly aligned with her skin folds, that I had assumed for seven years it was a faint birthmark from her delivery in that cold Vermont cottage.
Kai leaned down, pulling a small diagnostic penlight from his jacket. He clicked it on, focusing a sharp beam of intense blue light onto the small white mark.
Under the specialized spectrum, a thin, metallic thread—thinner than a human hair—was visible beneath the skin, running directly from the base of her skull down into the silver chain of the locket she wore.
"It’s an analogue bio-luminescent sensor," Kai whispered, his face going completely white. "A passive bio-frequency transmitter developed by Swiss military research in the late nineties. It doesn't track location... it reads neural resonance patterns. Every time she feels safe, every time her heart rate settles into a specific frequency... it records the data into the locket's micro-core."
"The locket..." I choked out, looking at the silver heart sitting on the pillow. "All those years... I thought I was protecting her. I kept her close to me... I put that locket around her neck because Clara told me to..."
"Clara didn't know," Kai said fiercely, grabbing my wrists and pulling my eyes to his. "Listen to me, Maya! Clara was a victim! She thought she was giving you a key to save her daughter! Ettore manipulated both of you!"
Lily stirred, her long eyelashes fluttering open. She blinked against the dim blue light, looking up at us with sleepy, confused eyes.
"Mommy?" she murmured, rubbing her nose with the back of her small hand. "Why are you crying? Is the sad man back?"
"No, baby," I sobbed, pulling her into my arms and burying my face in her shoulder. "No one is sad. Mommy is just... Mommy loves you so much."
Kai reached down and picked up the silver locket. With surgical precision, he pulled a thin set of titanium tweezers from his pocket, holding the clasp under the diagnostic light.
"It’s locked with a localized frequency key," Kai said to Lev, who was standing by the bedroom door with his weapon drawn. "If we try to cut the chain or force the clasp open without the master signal, the micro-charge inside the core will short-circuit, causing a high-frequency acoustic burst that could permanently damage her auditory nerve."
"He built a dead-man's switch into a seven-year-old child's necklace," Lev growled, his face twisting in disgust. "That old bastard isn't human."
"He wants the Bridgeport rail yard," Kai said, standing up and tucking the penlight back into his coat. "He wants me to bring her there so he can use his master signal to unlock the locket and extract the full encryption sequence Clara hid inside her mind."
"We can't take her there, Kai!" I yelled, standing up to block him. "You saw what he is! He’ll kill us all the moment he gets what he wants!"
Kai looked down at me, his eyes burning with an intense, terrifying clarity that banished every trace of doubt from the room.
"He thinks he’s dealing with the old Harrington family, Maya," Kai said softly, placing his hand over mine. "He thinks I’m going to play by his rules because he holds a trigger. He forgot one very important thing."
May you like
"What?" I asked, wiping my tears.
"He thinks I’m fighting for an empire," Kai whispered, glancing back at Lily, who was watching him with wide, trusting eyes. "He has no idea what I’m willing to burn down to keep my family safe."
