Chapter 17 - The Shadow in the LedgersOne Month Later.

The construction of the new Harrington estate was ninety percent complete. The high perimeter walls were now covered in thick, lush ivy, the bulletproof glass windows reflected the warm summer clouds, and the sweet smell of damp earth and fresh-cut grass filled the morning air.

I sat in the sunlit study on the second floor, looking over a stack of legal documents spread across a heavy mahogany desk.

Beside me stood Mr. Harrison, an elderly, silver-haired attorney who had represented the Harrington family's legitimate corporate assets for over thirty years. He adjusted his gold-rimmed spectacles, tapping a thick blue folder with a fountain pen.

"Everything is in order, Mrs. Vance," Harrison explained smoothly. "The land deeds for the entire Hawthorne Road sector have been consolidated under a private family trust. The old house at the end of the road has been preserved as a historical landmark under your name. And the Swiss accounts..."

He paused, sliding a confidential financial ledger toward me.

"The late Don Ettore Vance’s off-shore holdings were fully liquidated through a series of court-ordered restructuring trusts in Luxembourg," Harrison continued. "Over three hundred million dollars has been successfully converted into clean, tax-exempt municipal bonds and educational endowments registered under Lily’s birth name: Clara Lily Vance-Harrington."

I stared at the staggering numbers on the paper. "Clara Lily..."

"Kai insisted that both names be placed on her legal identity," Harrison smiled faintly. "He wants her to carry the truth of her mother, but the protection of his name."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the study popped open.

Lily burst into the room wearing a small white tennis skirt, a pair of bright green visor sunglasses pushed up on her head, and holding two high-end carbon-fiber badminton rackets that Kai had custom-ordered from Japan with her initials—C.L.V.—engraved in gold foil along the handles.

"Mommy! Stop reading those boring papers!" Lily demanded, marching up to the desk and slamming one of the rackets onto my legal documents. "Uncle Kai says if you don't come down to the court in two minutes, we’re going to start the tournament without you and give your trophy to Lev!"

I laughed, leaning over the desk to kiss her soft forehead. "Lev plays badminton?"

"He’s terrible!" Lily giggled, leaning in to whisper conspiratorially. "He keeps trying to hold the racket like a pistol! He hit his own knee twice!"

In the doorway behind her, Kai appeared, leaning casually against the wooden frame. He wore a simple navy blue polo shirt, khaki shorts, and a relaxed, easy smile that reached all the way to his clear blue eyes.

"Don't slander my head of security, Lily," Kai teased gently, walking into the room and wrapping his arms around her waist, picking her up off the ground while she shrieked with laughter. "Lev is executing a very complex defensive strategy."

"He’s clumsy!" she yelled, kicking her legs playfully.

Kai looked over her shoulder at me, his eyes softening as he noticed the legal documents on the desk. He set Lily down, giving her a gentle push toward the hallway. "Go get the shuttlecocks from the kitchen, sweetie. Tell Maria to pour three glasses of fresh lemonade."

"Okay! But hurry up!" she called back, her small sneakers squeaking as she sprinted down the long marble corridor.

Kai walked over to the desk, standing behind my chair and resting his hands lightly on my shoulders. He leaned down, pressing his cheek against mine as he looked at the open ledger.

"Are you okay with all this, Maya?" Kai asked quietly. "The name... the trust... the history?"

I reached up, covering his hands with mine.

"I spent seven years running from names, Kai," I said softly, turning my head to look into his eyes. "I thought safety meant being invisible. I thought love meant hiding in a broken house at the end of a gravel road."

May you like

"And now?"

"Now I know safety isn't a place you hide," I smiled, tracing the sharp line of his jaw with my thumb. "It’s the people who stand in front of you when the dark comes."
