Chapter 5 - The Siege of Harrington ManorThe world erupted into absolute chaos.

Automatic gunfire echoed from the lower levels of the estate, sounding like heavy thunder tearing through the marble halls. The heavy scent of cordite and burning upholstery drifted up through the ventilation shafts.

My heart plummeted into a dark, bottomless abyss. They followed me. All those years I thought I had successfully hidden from my father’s old associates… they had been watching me, using me as a tether, waiting for the exact moment I crossed into Kai Harrington’s territory so they could strike at both of us at once.

“Lily!” I screamed, pushing past Kai and sprinting into the hallway.

“Maya, wait!” Kai lunged forward, catching my arm and pulling me back just as a heavy burst of 5.56mm rounds shattered the high stained-glass window at the end of the corridor, showering the carpet with sharp crimson fragments.

“Where is she?!” I shrieked, hysterical, beating my fists against Kai’s chest. “Where is my daughter?!”

“Lev, secure the library!” Kai barked into a small radio clipped to his collar. “Get Lily down to the panic vault beneath the wine cellar now!”

“Copy that, Boss! I have the girl! We're moving!” Lev’s voice crackled through the static over the sound of heavy gunfire.

Kai grabbed my shoulders, pinning me against the wall while keeping his body between me and the hallway windows. “Listen to me! The house is compromised! Julian Moretti brought a small army! If you panic, you die, and if you die, I lose the only person who can keep Lily calm!”

“They followed me, Kai,” I sobbed, the crushing weight of guilt suffocating me. “It’s my fault… I brought them here…”

“Shut up,” Kai snapped, but his hand cupped the back of my neck gently for a brief second. “You didn't bring them here. They’ve been circling us like vultures for a decade. Today, we put an end to it.”

He thrust a small black compact pistol into my hands.

“Do you know how to use this?”

I stared at the heavy cold metal in my palm. “My father made me practice when I was sixteen.”

“Good. Point, press, kill. Don't hesitate.”

Kai turned toward the grand staircase, racking his handgun again. Three men in black tactical gear with unmarked red armbands reached the top of the stairs, their assault rifles raised.

Before they could acquire their targets, Kai stepped into the open. He fired four rapid shots with terrifying, mechanical precision. Three bullets took the first two men directly in the chest, while the third shot caught the last attacker right under the chin. They crumpled down the marble steps like ragdolls.

“Move!” Kai grabbed my wrist, pulling me through a hidden panel in the mahogany wall that slid open with a soft hydraulic hiss.

We descended down a narrow, dark spiral staircase illuminated only by dim red emergency lights. The sound of explosions and gunfire above us grew slightly muffled, but the vibration of heavy weapons shook the concrete walls around us.

We reached the bottom of the stairs, emerging into a massive underground bunker lined with reinforced steel doors and wall-to-wall surveillance monitors displaying live feeds of the carnage above.

In the center of the room, Lily was sitting on a steel crate, wrapped in a tactical jacket that Lev had draped over her small shoulders. She was clutching her silver locket tightly, her eyes wide with terror, but she wasn't crying.

“Mommy!” Lily screamed, leaping off the crate and throwing herself into my arms as I dropped to my knees.

“I’m here, baby! I’m here!” I buried my face in her neck, holding her so tightly I could barely breathe.

“They’re blowing up the house, Mommy,” she whimpered. “Is the sad man’s badminton set ruined?”

Kai stepped over to us, looking down at the little girl who was currently worried about a ten-dollar racket while a fifty-million-dollar war raged above her head. A dark, fiercely protective smile touched his lips.

“I’ll buy a thousand badminton sets, Lily,” Kai promised softly, kneeling beside us.

Suddenly, every surveillance monitor in the room flickered to life, overriding the external security feeds.

A man’s face appeared on the screens—slicked-back dark hair, cold dead eyes, and a long surgical scar running down the left side of his throat. Julian Moretti—the current head of the Moretti syndicate, and the son of the monster who had tortured Clara.

“Good evening, Kai,” Julian’s voice sneered through the bunker’s speakers, dripping with malicious amusement. “I see you’ve finally met your little niece. Touching family reunion, isn't it?”
