Chapter 15 - The Breaking of the Line"Kill him!" Ettore shrieked, his gravelly voice cracking as he pointed his silver cane at Kai. "Kill him now!"

The mercenaries, despite being blinded by their fried night-vision gear and disoriented by the EMP pulse, were professionals. They raised their weapons, relying on muscle memory and the ambient floodlights to open fire.
THWIP-THWIP-THWIP!
Before a single mercenary could pull a trigger, the dark windows of the old abandoned power plant shattered simultaneously.
Lev and eight elite Harrington snipers, positioned in the high rafters of the ruined facility, opened fire with heavy suppressed rifles. High-caliber rounds tore through the night, striking the mercenaries with terrifying accuracy. Five men dropped into the wet gravel before they could even locate the source of the fire.
Kai didn't run for cover. He moved forward like a predator stalking prey through a burning forest.
He pulled two silver-plated handguns from inside his dark coat. As mercenaries scattered into the fog trying to find cover behind the dead Mercedes sedans, Kai fired with cold, mechanical efficiency. Every shot was a termination; every movement was calculated to absolute perfection.
A mercenary lunged from behind an armored sedan, wielding a combat shotgun. Kai ducked under the swing, grabbed the man’s tactical vest, slammed him against the hot hood of the car, and discharged three rounds directly into his chest plate before spinning around to shoot another attacker attempting to flank him from the left.
The rail yard became a theater of brutal, localized destruction.
I sat in the reinforced passenger seat of a secondary armored vehicle parked two hundred yards back in the tree line, holding a tactical display screen. Beside me sat Lily, her ears protected by heavy soundproof earmuffs, happily coloring in a picture book with a set of bright yellow crayons under a small LED reading light. She had no idea that outside, the air was torn apart by lead and steel.
"Is Kai winning his game?" Lily asked without looking up from her coloring book, carefully filling in the lines of a cartoon dragon.
I wiped a cold drop of sweat from my temple, my eyes glued to the heat-signature feed on the tactical screen.
"Yes, baby," I whispered, my voice trembling as I watched Kai’s red heat-signature march steadily through the blue shapes of the enemy forces. "Uncle Kai is winning."
Back in the rail yard, the gunfire began to taper off into sporadic, dying echoes.
Out of twenty elite mercenaries, nineteen lay dead or dying in the mud and gravel. The last remaining guard dropped his weapon, threw his hands into the air, and ran blindly into the fog toward the cold waters of the bay. Lev’s sniper rifle cracked once from the power plant roof, and the runner fell silent in the high grass.
The floodlights flickered, returning to partial power as the backup generators kicked in.
In the center of the clearing, surrounded by dead men and idling smoke, sat Don Ettore Vance.
His velvet chair had tipped over in the chaos. He was crawling backward through the wet, oil-stained mud, dragging his useless legs, his expensive grey suit ruined, his silver-headed vulture cane broken in two on the ground beside him.
Kai walked over slowly, his polished leather shoes crunching softly on the wet gravel. He stood over the ancient tyrant, his gun held loosely at his side, his face completely splattered with mud and fine droplets of dark blood.
Ettore looked up, coughing violently, his yellow-green eyes wide with an ancient, pathetic terror.
"Kai..." Ettore wheezed, pressing his trembling, mud-covered hands together in a desperate plea. "We are men of the old blood... we are the architects of this state... you cannot kill me like a dog in the dirt..."
Kai looked down at him with no hatred, no anger—only a profound, absolute disgust.
"You aren't an architect, Ettore," Kai said softly. "You're a parasite that fed on women and children because you were too weak to build anything that could survive without fear."
"I have two hundred million dollars in Zurich!" Ettore bargained, his voice rising into a hysterical screech. "I can give you the master accounts! I can give you the names of every senator in Washington who took our money! I can make you untouchable!"

Kai slowly raised his right handgun, pointing the barrel directly between Ettore Vance’s pale, terrified eyes.
"My niece plays badminton on Sunday mornings," Kai whispered. "That's the only empire I care about."
