Chapter 2 - The Cage of Silk and SteelThe room they put us in looked more like a five-star hotel suite than a cell, but the bulletproof glass and the absence of handles on the inside of the mahogany doors made the truth brutally clear: we were prisoners of the Harrington syndicate.

Lily sat on the edge of a massive king-sized bed wrapped in an Italian silk duvet, munching obliviously on a plate of hot cocoa and warm chocolate chip cookies that a terrified-looking housemaid had delivered ten minutes earlier.
“Mommy, why is the sad man angry now?” Lily asked, wiping a smear of chocolate from her chin. “Did I hit the shuttlecock too hard?”
“No, baby,” I whispered, sitting next to her and pulling her tightly into my arms. My hands were still trembling uncontrollably. “You did nothing wrong. It’s just… adults have complicated memories. Sometimes old things bring back bad thoughts.”
“Is he going to take my necklace?” She clutched the silver locket defensively through her sweater.
“No one is taking anything from you, Lily. I promise.”
I squeezed my eyes shut, pressing my forehead against her soft hair. My mind was racing through the dark corridors of a past I had spent seven long years running from.
They thought Kai Harrington was the only predator in New England. They were wrong.
Fifteen years ago, I wasn't 'Maya from Hawthorne Road.' I was Maya Vance, the daughter of Arthur Vance—the chief financial strategist for the Harrington family's greatest rivals, the Vance Syndicate. I was there the night the war broke out. I was there when the bombs went off in Hartford.
And I knew the truth that Kai Harrington had missed through his blinding fog of rage and grief: Clara Harrington hadn't died in that explosion.
She had been taken.
I heard the heavy electronic lock click outside the door. The mahogany door swung open silently, and Kai stepped inside. He had changed out of his snow-soaked suit into a crisp charcoal turtleneck and tailored slacks. Behind him stood a woman in a white lab coat carrying a silver metal case, flanked by Lev, who held a silenced pistol pressed against his thigh.
“It’s time, Maya,” Kai said softly. His eyes swept over Lily with an unsettling intensity—a mix of ravenous hope and cold, calculating skepticism.
“She’s a child, Kai,” I hissed, standing up to block his view of the bed. “You don’t get to scare her with needles and guns!”
“It’s just a cheek swab,” the woman in the lab coat offered gently, trying to de-escalate the tension. “No needles. Five seconds.”
“Why are you doing this?” I demanded, glaring directly into Kai’s icy blue eyes. “What happens if the DNA matches? What then? You think you can just claim a child you don't even know?”
Kai stepped around me with terrifying grace. He knelt in front of Lily, bringing his broad frame down to her level once again. The lethal mafia boss vanished, replaced by a man hanging off the ledge of sanity.
“Lily,” Kai said, his voice softer than I had ever heard it. “May I ask you a question?”
Lily looked at him, her dark eyes wide with childish curiosity. She pointed a half-eaten cookie at him. “Only if you apologize for losing the badminton match.”
A tiny, involuntary twitch touched the corner of Kai’s mouth. “I apologize. You played exceptionally well.”
“Okay. What’s your question?”
“Where did your mommy get you?”
My heart stopped. The blood roared in my ears like a tsunami.
“Kai, stop it!” I shouted, lunging forward, but Lev instantly stepped in, grabbing my arm and holding me back with iron strength.
Lily looked confused, glancing between me and the strange man kneeling before her. “Mommy didn't get me from a store. She told me I came from a star that fell into the woods when she was lonely.”
Kai stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. Then he slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, old leather-bound pocket watch. He pressed the crown, and a delicate, tinny melody began to play—a obscure Italian lullaby about a silver moon and a velvet night.
Lily’s eyes widened. Her lips parted automatically, and before I could stop her, she began to hum along with the melody, matching every single note perfectly.
Kai froze. The color drained from his lips.
“She knows the song,” Kai whispered, his voice cracking. “Only four people in the world knew that melody. My mother, my father, me... and Clara.”
He snapped his head toward me, his eyes burning with a terrifying realization.

“Who is she, Maya? Tell me the truth before the lab results force it out of you!”
“I saved her!” I screamed, tearing my arm away from Lev’s grip and collapsing to my knees in front of Kai, grabbing the lapels of his sweater. “I saved her from your family’s fire! If I hadn't taken her, she would be dead!”
