Chapter 11 - The Inheritance Clause

The notification light on the dresser flickered again, a subtle amber pulse in the quiet nursery. Savannah glanced at it, her expression shifting from playful amusement to cool, calculated focus.

"What is it?" I asked, shifting sleeping baby Leo slightly in my arms.

"An alert from the probate court in Sacramento," she said, picking up the device. "Your mother’s attorney just filed a motion regarding your late father’s estate. It seems Bernice is trying to claim a hidden trust that was supposedly locked away until her seventy-fifth birthday."

I frowned, a familiar knot tightening in my stomach. "I thought my father left everything to the family foundation before he passed."

"He did," Savannah replied, her thumbs flying across the screen with practiced speed. "Or at least, that’s what Bernice wanted everyone to believe. But according to these digitized probate logs I just unlocked, your father set up a secondary contingency clause three weeks before he died. A clause that explicitly states if Bernice is ever convicted of fraud, extortion, or physical abuse, her entire share of the estate reverts..."

She paused, looking up at me with wide eyes.

"...reverts directly to you and me."

My breath caught. My mother hadn't just been trying to extort us for quick cash at the diner; she had been desperately trying to secure liquidity before her pending federal trial triggered the forfeiture of the estate.

"She’s trapped," I realized, a grim satisfaction replacing the knot in my chest. "If the trial proceeds, she loses everything."

"Not just everything," Savannah corrected, a brilliant, sharp smile touching her lips. "If we file a civil countersuit citing financial predation and domestic battery before the probate hearing next Tuesday, we can legally strip her of the family home in Sacramento, her pension, and every last cent she tried to hide."

"Let's do it," I said without a single second of hesitation.
