Chapter 14 - The Verdict in 4B

Judge Harrison, a stern-faced man with silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses, sat behind the raised mahogany bench, adjusting his reading glasses as he scanned the thick stack of documents Marcus had submitted.

The courtroom was dead silent save for the hum of the overhead ventilation.

"I have reviewed the emergency motion for asset forfeiture and estate reallocation," Judge Harrison said, his deep voice carrying across the room. He looked up, casting a severe gaze toward Bernice’s public defender, then shifting his eyes to my mother. "Mrs. Miller, your counsel has submitted an argument claiming these probate holdings are exempt from criminal penalties. How do you plead to the civil counts of financial predation?"

Bernice’s public defender stood up nervously. "Your Honor, my client maintains her innocence regarding—"

"Save it, Counselor," Judge Harrison interrupted coldly, sliding a single sheet of paper across his desk. "I have listened to the audio transcripts provided by the plaintiffs. I have reviewed the forensic accounting logs detailing how Mrs. Miller systematically drained corporate accounts and extorted business partners. And most critically, I have read the medical and legal documentation of domestic abuse committed against Mrs. Savannah Miller."

My mother’s face went chalk white.

"Under Section 442 of the California Probate Code," Judge Harrison continued, striking his gavel once with a sharp, echoing crack, "any beneficiary convicted or legally implicated in acts of physical violence, extortion, or coercion against co-beneficiaries or estate stakeholders forfeits all rights to said estate immediately."

He looked directly at Bernice.

"The motion for complete asset forfeiture is granted. The family home, the Sacramento trust, and all residual accounts are hereby transferred in full to Christopher Miller and Savannah Miller."

A sharp, breathless gasp escaped my mother’s throat. She tried to stand again, shouting curses, but the guards quickly hauled her out through the side exit, her frantic screams fading down the corridor until the heavy doors slammed shut.

It was over. The empire of manipulation had collapsed in less than ten minutes.
