Chapter 6 - The Midnight Packing PartyBy 9:00 PM, the grand ballroom was empty, the roses and beeswax candles abandoned to the cleanup crew. But back at Maple Ridge, the lights blazed in every single room.

I sat at the mahogany kitchen island—the very kitchen I had designed with my mother’s memory in mind—sipping a glass of chilled champagne.
The front door swung open with a violent crash.
Ethan stormed into the kitchen, his tuxedo jacket gone, his tie undone and dangling loosely around his collar like a noose. His face was twisted in a mask of manic fury.
"Are you insane?!" Ethan roared, slamming a cardboard box onto the pristine marble countertop. "You actually had the locks changed? I couldn't even get my key into the front door!"
"Did you honestly think I was going to let you sleep here tonight after what you pulled?" I asked calmly, taking a slow sip of my champagne. "The locksmith was here by 4:00 PM. New deadbolts, high-security smart locks. Your fingerprint access has been revoked, Ethan."
"This is my home too!" he screamed, slamming his fist onto the island. "We lived here together! I decorated this study! I planted those hydrangeas in the front yard!"
"You planted hydrangeas with the gardener I hired and paid for using my parents' money," I corrected, standing up to face him eye-to-eye. "You are a guest who overstayed his welcome by about three years, Ethan. Now pack your things. You have three hours before midnight."
Diane appeared behind him in the doorway, looking equally disheveled, her pale silver dress stained with spilled red wine from the chaos at the hotel.

"You arrogant little monster!" Diane shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at me. "My son is a brilliant lawyer! He could have any woman he wants! You trapped him, and now you're throwing him out on the street like a stray dog!"
"Then take him in," I smiled coldly. "Your rented duplex outside Cleveland still has room, doesn't it? Or did you sell that too?"
