Chapter 9 - The Ashes and the BlueprintBy midnight, the driveway of Maple Ridge was empty except for Ethan's silver sports car, packed to the brim with cardboard boxes, designer suits, and crushed pride.

I watched from the second-story library window as Ethan slid into the driver's seat. He looked up once, catching my silhouette through the glass. I didn't flinch. I didn't wave. I simply watched as he turned the ignition and sped down the private driveway, tires crunching against the gravel until the red taillights vanished into the dark Westchester night.

I turned away from the window and walked over to my desk.

On the center of the mahogany wood sat the dark blue folder Ethan had proudly pulled out at the altar. Curious, I picked it up and flipped it open.

Inside wasn't just a mock estate plan for his mother. It was a complete legal draft transferring 100% of Maple Ridge’s ownership rights to Diane Cole, dated three weeks prior—signed by Ethan acting under a forged power of attorney he had secretly tried to execute using a notary public friend from his college days.

My breath caught. It wasn't just a emotional betrayal or a public stunt. It was a felony-level forgery.

I pulled out my phone, dialed a direct number, and waited for it to ring.

"District Attorney’s office, corruption and white-collar division," a crisp voice answered.

"Yes," I said steadily, looking out at the sprawling, peaceful grounds of my home. "My name is Oanh Tran. I need to report a fraudulent estate transfer and identity manipulation involving an attorney named Ethan Cole."
