Chapter 2 - THE VAULT OF SECRETSInside the pitch-black corridors of the mansion, Lydia Vance moved with frantic, calculated speed.

The expensive red silk of her dress rustled against the antique mahogany wainscoting as she sprinted toward the east wing. Her high heels clicked against the hardwood, but she kicked them off halfway down the hall, running in her bare feet through the suffocating darkness.

She had anticipated many scenarios. She had planned for police raids, federal investigations, and even angry creditors. But she had never calculated that Vincent Moretti—the reclusive, fiercely private global shipping tycoon—would personally tear down the gates of the estate himself.

He shouldn’t even be in the country, Lydia thought, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she punched the emergency biometric code into the hidden wall panel behind the master library.

BEEP. ACCESS DENIED.

"Damn it!" Lydia hissed, slamming her palm against the sensor.

The system was locked. Vincent’s digital blackout had severed the estate’s local intranet from the cloud, rendering her master override codes useless. But Lydia was not just an administrative assistant or Julian’s mistress; she was the architect of the financial trap that had swallowed Audrey Moretti whole.

She reached into the lining of her dress, withdrawing a small, military-grade decryption dongle—a hardware bypass she had stolen from a Swiss bank vault three years prior.

She plugged it into the auxiliary port beneath the scanner.

The panel flickered back to life with a sickly amber glow.

DECRYPTING... 40%... 70%... ACCESS GRANTED.

The heavy steel bookshelf swung outward with a deep, hydraulic hiss, revealing a small, climate-controlled safe room illuminated by emergency red backup LEDs. In the center of the room sat a massive iron-reinforced vault door and a desk stacked with passports, bearer bonds, and a laptop directly linked to international shell companies.

Lydia lunged for the laptop. If she could transfer just five million dollars to her Cayman Islands account before the Moretti tech squad breached the firewall, she could disappear forever.

"Going somewhere, Ms. Vance?"

Lydia froze. The blood drained entirely from her face.

Standing in the doorway of the panic room, leaning casually against the steel frame with his arms crossed, was a man she had never seen before—yet his aura commanded absolute terror. He wore a crisp tactical vest over a black turtleneck, and a chilling smile played on his lips.

"Who... who are you?" Lydia whispered, her fingers hovering inches from the keyboard.

"I'm the guy who disables the traps you build," the operative said softly, stepping into the room. "Name's Kael. Lead tactical analyst for Moretti Global Security."

Lydia’s hand darted toward a small revolver resting on the desk.

In a fraction of a second, before her fingers could even brush the steel grip, Kael closed the distance. A heavy combat boot slammed onto the edge of the desk, snapping the laptop in half with a deafening crunch of plastic and silicon. At the same time, his hand shot out, pinning Lydia’s wrist against the wood with bone-crushing pressure.

"Ahhh!" Lydia shrieked, her face twisting in agony as the revolver clattered harmlessly to the floor.

"Smart people don't reach for guns when they're already checkmated," Kael whispered, his voice dangerously close to her ear. He retrieved a small, encrypted thumb drive from the ruined laptop’s motherboard with surgical precision. "Especially when the man whose daughter you tortured is downstairs waiting for the answers."

Lydia glared up at him, her eyes wide with feral desperation. "You think Vincent has won? You think freezing accounts and locking gates means it's over? The people behind this—the syndicate that funded the Thorne estate—they don't care about money. They care about silence. And Audrey will never be safe, even in your arms."

Kael smirked, snapping the thumb drive into his tactical pocket. "Let them try to make her silent. Today, the Moretti family is writing a completely new rulebook."
