Chapter 9 - THE SUBTERRANEAN SHOWDOWNThe abandoned subterranean water treatment facility was a labyrinth of echoing concrete tunnels, dripping pipes, and massive rusted machinery humming with high-voltage electricity.

Vincent’s SUV crashed through the rusted security gate of the facility, sliding to a violent halt right beside the main service entrance.

He didn't wait for backup. He grabbed a tactical assault rifle from the passenger seat, checked the magazine, and kicked the heavy steel access door open with a resounding CRACK.

The interior was pitch-black, illuminated only by the pulsing red emergency lights of the central server room located at the bottom of the lowest level.

As Vincent descended the spiral metal staircase, the sound of his boots echoed sharply through the cavernous drain tunnels.

RAT-A-TAT-TAT!

A burst of automatic gunfire shattered the concrete wall inches from his head.

Vincent dropped instantly, rolling behind a massive industrial generator as a hail of bullets shredded the air above him.

"Moretti!" a voice echoed through the PA system of the facility, distorted and mocking. "You walked right into the lions' den! The server is purging its memory blocks as we speak. In three minutes, your daughter will permanently lose every single memory of her life—she won't even remember who you are!"

Vincent gritted his teeth, his eyes scanning the catwalk above through the dim red gloom. He spotted two armed operatives reloading their weapons behind a stack of control panels.

Without hesitation, Vincent rose from cover, raising his rifle with lethal precision.

BANG! BANG!

Two crisp shots echoed through the chamber. Both operatives dropped instantly, tumbling over the railing and crashing onto the concrete floor below.

Vincent broke into a dead sprint, reaching the blast door of the central server room.

The heavy steel door was sealed tight, its digital keypad flashing a rapid red countdown: 01:45... 01:44... 01:43...

Vincent slammed his hand against the panel, but it required a biometric master override code.

"Damn it!" Vincent cursed, lifting the butt of his rifle and smashing it against the electronic screen until sparks showered the floor.

At that moment, Kael’s voice crackled through his ear comm. "Sir! I’m patching into your tactical vest relay! Connect your wrist datapad to the emergency service port on the right side of the doorframe—I can piggyback my signal into their mainframe!"

Vincent didn't waste a millisecond. He ripped open the service panel, yanked out the data cable from his wrist unit, and jammed it directly into the facility’s mainframe port.

"Do it now, Kael!" Vincent shouted.

PROCESSING... OVERRIDING MAINFRAME ENCRYPTION... 80%... 95%... ACCESS GRANTED.

With a deafening pneumatic hiss, the massive steel blast door swung slowly open, revealing a blinding wall of blue light and server racks humming furiously in the center of the room.

And sitting at the main control console, frantically trying to hit the final master delete key, was a figure in a tailored grey suit.

Julian Thorne.

Vincent froze in his tracks. His eyes widened in absolute shock.

"Julian?" Vincent whispered, lowering his rifle slightly. "You... you were behind the syndicate all along?"

Julian slowly turned around in his chair, a manic, broken grin plastered across his face. Blood trickled from his forehead where he had hit it during his arrest earlier that night—he must have had a double or bribed his way out of federal holding using syndicate connections within minutes.

"Surprised, Moretti?" Julian laughed hysterically, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "You thought the Thornes were just local aristocrats? We built this city’s underworld. And Audrey... sweet, fragile Audrey... she stumbled onto our master ledger. We couldn't kill her outright because her death would attract too many federal questions. So we broke her mind instead."

Julian's hand hovered inches above the red master purge button.

"One more step, Moretti, and I press delete. Her memories vanish forever. She'll look at you in that hospital bed and see a complete stranger."

Vincent stood frozen, his finger resting lightly on the trigger of his rifle, caught in the ultimate nightmare every parent fears.
