Chapter 5 - THE SHADOW SYNDICATEVincent stared at the encrypted photo on his wrist terminal, his expression hardening into absolute steel.

The Syndicate.

For over a decade, whispers of a shadow organization—an elite cabal of ultra-wealthy industrialists, corrupt politicians, and black-market financiers who manipulated global assets from the shadows—had floated through high-level intelligence circles. Vincent had always treated them as ghosts, a myth invented by conspiracy theorists.

Until tonight.

He gently released Audrey’s hand, tucking the blanket around her shoulders. "Rest for a little while, sweetheart. I need to take a quick call in the adjoining room."

"Is everything okay, Dad?" Audrey asked, her intuition picking up the sudden shift in his demeanor.

"Everything is fine," Vincent lied smoothly, offering her a reassuring smile. "Just some routine cleanup with the legal team."

He walked into the private study connected to the recovery suite, locking the soundproof glass door behind him. He tapped his wrist communicator, opening a direct, encrypted audio channel to Kael.

"Report," Vincent commanded quietly.

"Sir, the package dropped by the unmarked chopper at the Thorne estate has been secured by our team and brought to the mobile lab," Kael’s voice came through crisp and clear. "We ran a full chemical, biological, and digital scan. No explosives. But there is a physical item inside... and a digital data stream."

"What is the item?"

"A custom-engraved gold signet ring," Kael replied, hesitation evident in his tone. "Bearing the crest of the Veritas Consortium—the very syndicate we thought dissolved after the European market crash of 2018."

Vincent’s breath hitched slightly. The Veritas Consortium was not a myth. Years ago, they had tried to force Moretti Global into an exclusive cartel controlling global shipping lanes. When Vincent flatly refused their terms, mysterious accidents began plaguing his supply chains—accidents he had ruthlessly dismantled one by one until they retreated into the dark.

"And the digital stream?" Vincent asked, his voice dropping an octave.

"It’s an encrypted video file, sir. It auto-played the moment our technicians connected the physical drive to our isolated terminal." Kael paused for a second. "You need to see this."

"Mirror the feed to my private secure monitor," Vincent ordered.

In front of him, the wall-mounted high-definition display flickered to life. The screen was dark for a moment before a figure materialized out of the shadows.

The person wore an expensive, tailored charcoal suit, but their face was completely obscured by a sophisticated digital mask that scrambled their features and modulated their voice into a deep, mechanical drone.

“Mr. Moretti,” the modulated voice echoed through the secure study. “You have proven yourself exceptionally thorough tonight. Dismantling the Thorne family and exposing their little enterprise in record time. Impressive.”

Vincent crossed his arms, staring coldly at the screen. "State your business or disconnect. I don't have time for masked cowards."

“Oh, you have time, Vincent,” the voice chuckled softly. “Because the game has only just begun. The Thorne estate was never just about a bitter marriage or a family dispute. It was a holding facility. A testing ground.”

A chill ran down Vincent’s spine. "What are you talking about?"

“Audrey didn't just stumble into a nightmare; she was chosen,” the digital mask smiled on screen. “She accidentally accessed a decentralized ledger belonging to our network while interning in Geneva nine months ago. That’s why Julian married her. That’s why Eleanor locked her in the cellar. They weren't just torturing a troubled girl—they were trying to extract the encryption keys she memorized before her memory supposedly failed.”

Vincent’s fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. Every muscle in his body tightened into a coiled spring. "If you touch her again—if any of your operatives come within a thousand miles of my daughter—I will hunt down every single member of your syndicate and tear your global network apart piece by piece."

“We admire your spirit, Vincent. Truly, we do,” the voice replied calmly. “Which is why we are offering you a choice. Drop the investigation into the Thorne family’s offshore accounts. Return the decryption drive Kael recovered from Lydia Vance. And hand Audrey over to our custody at midnight tomorrow at the old dockyard.”

"And if I refuse?" Vincent asked, his voice dead calm, carrying the weight of a coming storm.

“Then you will discover that the people who locked your daughter in a cellar for eight months were merely amateurs compared to what we have planned for her next. Tick-tock, Mr. Moretti.”

The screen flashed red, and the transmission abruptly terminated, leaving behind a blank, silent display.

Vincent stood motionless for three seconds. Then, he tapped his comms link again.

"Kael."

"Yes, sir?"

"Mobilize the entire Apex Vanguard strike force. Put every satellite we own into high-altitude surveillance over the city. And prepare my personal jet."

"Where are we going, sir?" Kael asked.

"We're not going anywhere," Vincent said, his eyes burning with absolute, unyielding fury. "We’re laying a trap. And this time, the shadow syndicate is going to find out what happens when you poke a sleeping dragon."
