Chapter 4 - THE RIPPLE EFFECTWithin two hours of Kael’s broadcast, the financial and social earthquake hit the city with devastating force.

On the top floor of the Thorne Group’s downtown skyscraper, the emergency board of directors meeting was absolute chaos. Trading screens flashed brilliant crimson as Moretti Global Liquidators systematically dumped millions of shares of Thorne-affiliated stocks, shorting the company into oblivion.

"The stock has dropped eighty-two percent in forty minutes!" shouted Chief Financial Officer Marcus Vance, sweating profusely as he stared at his terminal. "Bank loans have been called in early! Every single institutional investor is pulling out!"

Doors flew open, and three federal agents in dark FBI windbreakers marched directly into the boardroom, flanked by two armed United States marshals.

"Richard Thorne? Julian Thorne?" the lead agent announced, holding up a federal arrest warrant. "You are being placed under arrest for wire fraud, kidnapping, extortion, and conspiracy to commit medical fraud across state lines."

Marcus swallowed hard, stepping back. "Wait! I’m just the CFO! I didn't sign those documents!"

"Your signature is on the corporate bribe distribution ledger recovered from Lydia Vance's digital safe," the agent replied coldly, snapping handcuffs onto Marcus's wrists before he could take another step. "You're coming with us too."

As the elite members of the city’s corporate aristocracy were frog-marched out of their own skyscraper in handcuffs, flashing camera drones buzzed outside the windows like angry hornets. The headlines scrolling across every major news network read:

EMPIRE OF LIES: THORNE FAMILY ARRESTED IN MASSIVE KIDNAPPING AND FRAUD SCANDAL FOLLOWING MORETTI GLOBAL RAID. AUDREY MORETTI FOUND ALIVE AFTER 8 MONTHS IN SUBTERRANEAN CAPTIVITY.

Across town, in a secure private medical suite owned by Moretti Global, Audrey rested comfortably in a pristine, sunlit room overlooking the city skyline.

The sterile white walls had been replaced with warm pastel tones, fresh flowers sat on the mahogany table, and a dedicated team of trauma specialists monitored her recovery with utmost care. But despite the physical safety, Audrey still jumped every time a shadow crossed the doorway.

The door gently clicked open. Vincent stepped inside, carrying a small porcelain tray with a bowl of warm broth and a glass of fresh juice.

"How are you feeling, sweetheart?" Vincent asked softly, pulling up a chair beside the bed.

Audrey managed a faint, tired smile. "I still feel like I'm dreaming, Dad. Every time I close my eyes, I expect to wake up back in that cold cellar with the iron door locked from the outside."

Vincent set the tray down and gently took her fragile hand in his. "You never have to go back there, Audrey. Never. The people who put you there are currently sitting in federal holding cells, facing life without parole. Their assets are frozen, their company is liquidated, and their names will forever be mud."

"What about Julian?" Audrey whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "He... he said he had powerful friends in the judiciary. He said nobody could touch his family."

"Julian’s friends found out very quickly what happens when you cross paths with a Moretti," Vincent said, his voice calm, steady, and utterly reassuring. "By sunrise, every judge who took a bribe from them will be suspended pending a federal ethics tribunal. Julian is facing twenty charges that carry mandatory minimum sentences. He will never see the outside of a maximum-security prison again."

Audrey closed her eyes, letting out a long, shaky breath as the last remnants of her fear began to dissolve. She squeezed her father’s hand tightly.

"Thank you, Dad... for not believing their lies."

Vincent kissed her forehead tenderly. "I would search every dark corner of this universe to bring you home, Audrey. You are my flesh and blood."

Just as peace finally seemed to settle over the room, a sharp, urgent chime sounded from the encrypted comms device on Vincent’s wrist.

Vincent glanced down at the screen. The encrypted message was from Kael, and it contained a single surveillance photo taken from the estate’s perimeter cameras shortly after the police left.

Vincent’s eyes narrowed instantly.

The photo showed a sleek, unmarked black helicopter hovering silently over the abandoned Thorne estate, dropping a single package onto the front steps before vanishing into the night clouds.

Attached to the photo was a text line from Kael: Sir, we intercepted the package. It's not from the Thornes. It’s addressed directly to you... and it bears the seal of the Syndicate.
