CHAPTER 1 THE BILLIONAIRE THOUGHT HIS EX-WIFE HAD BETRAYED HIM—THEN TWO NEWBORN BABIES DESTROYED EVERYTHING HE BELIEVED

The silence inside Room 203 became unbearable.
Damon Vexley had faced hostile takeovers worth billions of dollars. He had stared down prosecutors, ruthless competitors, and investors who wanted to erase his life's work.
Nothing...
Nothing had ever frightened him like the woman sitting in that hospital bed.
Sylvie carefully adjusted the tiny blanket covering one of the babies.
"You came," she whispered.
"I came because someone called me."
"You almost didn't."
His jaw tightened.
"I almost blocked the number."
She nodded slowly.
"I know."
That answer bothered him.
She knew him too well.
Seven months earlier, their divorce had become front-page gossip across New York.
Business magazines blamed Damon.
Celebrity blogs blamed Sylvie.
Neither version was true.
The truth had died long before the lawyers ever arrived.
Fifteen years together.
Thousands of memories.
Countless nights building his pharmaceutical empire from nothing.
Sylvie had worked beside him before there were luxury penthouses, private jets, and television interviews.
She answered customer calls.
Packed medicine boxes herself.
Typed contracts late into the night while Damon slept on a couch in their tiny Brooklyn office.
She believed in him before anyone else did.
Then success changed everything.
Board meetings replaced dinners.
Business trips replaced anniversaries.
Security guards knew Damon better than his own wife.
The loneliness slowly poisoned their marriage.
One misunderstanding became another.
Arguments became silence.
Silence became distance.
Distance became divorce.
Damon stared at the infants.
"Whose children are they?"
Sylvie didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she gently lifted the little boy.
The baby's tiny fingers wrapped around hers.
"He has your hands."
Damon's heartbeat skipped.
"What?"
"And she..."
Sylvie looked down at the little girl.
"...has your mother's eyes."
His face hardened.
"Stop playing games."
"I'm not."
"You expect me to believe these babies are mine?"
"They are."
His voice exploded through the room.
"That's impossible!"
Several nurses looked toward the door.
One quietly closed it.
Sylvie never flinched.
"I found out I was pregnant three days before our divorce became final."
Damon's world tilted.
"No..."
"I tried to tell you."
"You had my lawyers blocking every message."
"I emailed."
"My assistant filtered them."
"I came to your office."
"Security removed me."
"I waited outside your penthouse."
"You drove away before I could reach your car."
Every sentence struck harder than the last.
Damon remembered every one of those moments.
At the time, he believed she wanted more money.
More property.
Another legal fight.
He never imagined...
She had been trying to tell him he was about to become a father.
His knees suddenly felt weak.
"You should have fought harder."
The words escaped before he realized how cruel they sounded.
Sylvie smiled sadly.
"I already was."
Silence.
Then Damon noticed something strange.
Neither baby wore a hospital identification bracelet.
Instead...
Each infant had a tiny silver bracelet engraved with one word.
HOPE.
FAITH.
His eyes narrowed.
"Where are the hospital tags?"
Sylvie's face instantly changed.
The fear Damon remembered from years ago suddenly returned.
"They disappeared."
"What?"
"So did another baby."
Damon blinked.
"What are you talking about?"
She leaned closer.
"There were three."
The room went completely still.
Damon felt cold spread through his entire body.
Three?
He looked at the bassinets again.
Only two.
Outside the room...
A man wearing blue hospital scrubs quietly lowered his phone.
He smiled.
Then disappeared down the hallway.
Neither Damon nor Sylvie noticed.
But someone else had just heard everything.
END OF CHAPTER 1...

A baby had vanished.
And Damon had no idea his nightmare was only beginning.
