CHAPTER 9 THE FINAL BETRAYAL AT PIER 19—THE MAN WHO DESTROYED DAMON'S FAMILY STEPPED OUT OF THE SHADOWS

The rain returned just before midnight.

Pier 19 was deserted.

Cargo containers stood like giant black walls beneath the harbor lights, while waves slammed against the docks with relentless force.

Damon arrived exactly as instructed.

No bodyguards.

No police.

Only Adrian, Sylvie, and his mother remained hidden several hundred feet away, ready to intervene if everything went wrong.

At the center of the pier stood a single crib.

Inside...

Baby Courage slept peacefully.

Damon rushed toward him.

Then a voice echoed through the darkness.

"Don't take another step."

Floodlights exploded to life.

More than fifty armed operatives surrounded the pier.

At the center of them stood the mysterious leader of Project Genesis.

He slowly removed his mask.

Damon's heart stopped.

"No..."

It wasn't a stranger.

It wasn't a rival CEO.

It wasn't even a politician.

It was Harold Whitmore—the respected chairman of Vexley Pharmaceuticals.

The man Damon had called "Uncle Harold" since childhood.

The man who had comforted him at his father's funeral.

The man who had attended his wedding.

The man who had secretly orchestrated every tragedy in his life.

Harold smiled calmly.

"You finally figured it out."

"You murdered my father."

"No."

Harold's expression never changed.

"Your father tried to expose us."

"You forced my mother into hiding."

"She became... inconvenient."

"You stole my son."

"I protected an investment."

Damon's fists trembled.

"They're children!"

Harold looked toward the crib without emotion.

"They're the future."

He raised a remote control.

Large screens mounted on shipping containers suddenly illuminated.

Confidential documents flashed across them.

Medical records.

DNA reports.

Financial transactions.

Videos from hidden laboratories.

Thousands of illegal human experiments.

Every crime committed by Project Genesis over three decades.

Harold laughed.

"Do you know why I brought you here?"

Damon remained silent.

"Because none of this matters."

He pressed another button.

Red lights began blinking beneath the pier.

Adrian's face turned white.

"Explosives!"

Harold smiled wider.

"If I can't own Genesis..."

"...I'll erase every piece of evidence."

The countdown began.

03:00

02:59

02:58

Damon looked at the sleeping baby.

At Sylvie.

At his mother.

At Adrian.

He realized there was only one way to stop Harold.

He slowly stepped forward.

"I'll make you a deal."

Harold raised an eyebrow.

"I'm listening."

"Take me."

Harold smiled.

"I knew you still had your father's weakness."

"And what's that?"

"You'd sacrifice yourself for your family."

As Harold lowered his weapon to accept the offer...

A single gunshot echoed across the harbor.

Harold staggered backward.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

Everyone turned.

The shot had come from behind him.

The shooter lowered the smoking pistol.

It was Elena.

Damon's sister.

"I've spent eighteen years pretending to work for you," she said coldly.

"...just to end this tonight."
