CHAPTER 4 BULLETS RIPPED THROUGH THE WAREHOUSE—BUT THE MAN DAMON THOUGHT HAD BETRAYED HIM SAVED HIS LIFE

The warehouse erupted into chaos.

Glass exploded.

Steel beams rang as bullets slammed into them.

Damon threw himself over the cradle, shielding the sleeping newborn with his own body.

"Stay down!" Adrian shouted.

A second later, Adrian tackled Damon just as another burst of gunfire tore through the spot where his head had been.

The concrete floor cracked from the impact.

Damon stared at his brother in disbelief.

"You... saved me."

"I told you this wasn't about the company."

Adrian reached inside his jacket and pulled out a handgun.

"I've been running from these people for almost a year."

"They're the ones who altered the hospital records?"

Adrian nodded.

"They own people everywhere."

Outside, engines roared.

Black SUVs surrounded the warehouse.

At least twenty armed men stepped out.

Each wore identical black tactical uniforms with no insignia.

No names.

No badges.

Just one silver symbol stitched onto their sleeves.

A serpent wrapped around a medical cross.

Damon recognized it immediately.

"No..."

His voice barely escaped.

"It can't be."

Adrian looked at him.

"You know that symbol."

Damon's face turned pale.

"It belonged to Project Genesis."

Years ago, while expanding Vexley Pharmaceuticals, Damon had discovered references to a classified research division hidden inside decades-old company archives.

The files disappeared before he could investigate.

The board claimed the project had never existed.

Now...

The symbol stood only fifty feet away.

One of the armed men stepped forward.

He pressed a button on a loudspeaker.

"Damon Vexley."

His calm voice echoed through the warehouse.

"Hand over the child."

"No."

"You have one minute."

"Who are you?"

A slow laugh came through the speaker.

"You built an empire..."

"...without ever realizing who financed the foundation."

Damon's heart pounded.

The stranger continued.

"Your father wasn't our enemy."

"He was our partner."

The words hit harder than any bullet.

"My father would never—"

"Your father sold us the research."

"No!"

"He also sold us something far more valuable."

Silence.

"Your family."

Damon's breathing became uneven.

"What does that mean?"

The man smiled.

"Those babies were never supposed to be born."

The warehouse fell silent.

Even Adrian stopped moving.

The stranger slowly raised a small tablet.

He touched the screen.

An ultrasound image appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Not one.

Not three.

Six.

Damon stared in horror.

Sylvie had originally been carrying six embryos.

Only three survived.

Or so she had been told.

The stranger looked directly at Damon.

"You've spent fifteen years searching for competitors..."

"...when the greatest experiment has always carried your last name."

Before Damon could react—

A sniper's bullet shattered the loudspeaker.

Someone else had entered the fight.

High above the warehouse, a hooded figure stood on a rusted catwalk.

One precise shot.

Another.

Three armed men collapsed instantly.

Adrian looked up in shock.

"No..."

Damon frowned.

"You know who that is?"

Adrian whispered only one sentence.

"I thought she was dead."
