Chapter 1 - The Echo of Elena

The icy November rain drizzled down Michael Harrington’s tailored wool coat, but he didn’t feel the cold. His entire universe had just collapsed into a singular, suffocating focal point: four pair of striking, sea-foam green eyes staring back at him beneath the flickering amber streetlights of Fifth Avenue.
They were identical quadruplets. Nine years old, frail, huddled together against the biting wind in oversized, threadbare coats that had long lost their insulation. Between them sat a wet cardboard box holding tiny, painstakingly wrapped bundles of lavender and baby's breath.
“Flowers of Hope — $2.”
"Mister? Do you want to buy a flower?" the smallest girl asked, her voice trembling slightly from the cold. Her chin carried a tiny, distinctive dimple on the left side—a feature that hit Michael like a physical blow to the chest.
Ten years ago, that exact same chin dimple belonged to Elena Vance—the woman Michael had ruthlessly cast out of his life, his company, and the city.
"What... what are your names?" Michael whispered, his commanding boardroom voice reduced to a raspy tremor.
The eldest-looking girl stepped protectively in front of her sisters, her eyes narrowing with a fiercely guarded caution that was far too mature for a child. "We’re not supposed to talk to men in expensive suits. Mom told us never to trust anyone wearing silver cufflinks."
Michael’s heart slammed against his ribs. He looked down at his wrists. Gleaming on his cuffs were custom sterling-silver cufflinks carved with the Harrington crest—cufflinks designed a decade ago by Elena herself.
"Your mother..." Michael stammered, taking an involuntary step forward. "Where is your mother? Where is Elena?"
The protective girl’s eyes widened with sudden panic. "How do you know her name? Who are you?"
Before Michael could respond, the youngest child panicked. "Run! Chloe, he knows Mom!"
In a flash of chaos, the four girls snatched their cardboard box and darted into the swirling crowds of Manhattan. Michael gave chase, his Italian leather shoes slicking against the wet pavement. "Wait! Stop! I just want to help!"
He rounded the corner of 47th Street, but the girls had vanished into the maze of steam-vents and crowded alleys. All that remained on the rain-soaked asphalt was a small, rusted silver locket that one of them had dropped in her desperate escape.
Michael knelt down, his hand shaking violently as he scooped the locket from the grime. He pressed the latch.
Inside was a faded ultrasound photo dated exactly nine years ago, and behind it, a folded scrap of paper with Elena’s elegant handwriting:

“If you are reading this, Michael... know that I carried your legacy alone in the dark. Protect our four angels from your mother’s shadow.”
Michael collapsed onto his knees in the cold rain, the locket clutched to his chest as a terrible, sickening realization washed over him: The girls weren't just Elena's. They were HIS.
