Chapter 1 - The First ThreadThe coffee had gone completely cold, but I didn't pour it out. I wrapped both hands around the heavy ceramic mug, feeling the chill sink straight into my palms. Thirty-two years. Thirty-two years of sleeping beside a man who had mastered the art of the long, slow lie.

Richard thought I was a housewife who spent her afternoons pruning hydrangeas and balancing our checkbook. He had forgotten—or perhaps he had never truly understood—that before we married, I spent twelve-hour days knee-deep in corporate forensic audits, tracing hidden shell companies and unmasking embezzlers who thought they were smarter than the law.

If Richard wanted a war, he had picked the wrong opponent.

I picked up my phone and called David Thorne, my former colleague at the hospital system, now a private investigator who owed me three favors.

"Margaret?" David answered on the second ring, his voice gruff with professional caution. "It's been a while. Tell me you aren't calling about your ticker again."

"My heart is fine, David. But Richard’s business trip to Jacksonville just relocated to San Francisco with a marketing director named Vanessa Cole."

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end. "Ah. That kind of call."

"I need every digital footprint they’ve left in the last twelve months," I said, my voice dropping into the cold, clinical register I used to use when presenting embezzlement findings to a hostile board of directors. "Credit cards, text message backups, flight itineraries, hotel stays, and any property transactions he's touched. I want it all on my desk by morning."

"You got it, Meg," David said softly. "Hang in there."

I hung up, walked straight to the front door, unlocked it, and flipped the heavy brass deadbolt. Then I went to the kitchen drawer, pulled out a spare set of locks I had bought after a break-in down the street three years ago, and spent twenty minutes swapping out every single cylinder on the front and back doors. Richard Lawson was locked out of his own life.
