Chapter 3 - The Bloodline BetrayalMy stomach churned, a hot wave of acid rising in my throat. I sat back in Richard’s leather executive chair, staring at the forged signature. To forge a signature that precisely, someone needed access to old greeting cards, signed tax documents, or checks. Someone who lived in this house during our holiday visits. Someone who knew my habits down to the way I looped my capital M.

My phone buzzed against the polished mahogany desk.
It was a text from Chloe, our twenty-eight-year-old daughter, an interior designer living downtown in a loft apartment we had partially funded.
Hey Mom! Dad told me he’s stuck in Jacksonville working late on that massive marine deal. So sad you guys had to cancel your trip. Do you mind if I swing by the house tonight to pick up those old cookbooks of Grandma’s? I'm hosting a dinner party tomorrow.
I stared at the screen as the pieces of the puzzle slammed together with sickening violence.
Chloe wasn't asking for cookbooks. She was coming to check if the coast was clear, or perhaps to retrieve the original property deed before I noticed it was missing. Richard and Vanessa weren't just running away for a romantic getaway; they were executing a silent financial execution, stripping me of my home while I was distracted by a fake business trip.
My own flesh and blood had chosen a side. And it wasn't mine.

"Come right ahead, sweetheart," I typed back, my fingers steady as stone. "I'll leave the back door unlocked for you."
(Note: The locks were changed, but the kitchen window latch was left open just enough to invite a mouse into a trap.)
