Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the AlibiChloe stared at the paper as if it were a venomous snake. Her breath hitched, catching in her throat in short, shallow gasps.

"I—I didn't know it was like that," she whispered, her voice cracking as the facade completely shattered. Tears sprang to her eyes, hot and genuine, but they didn't stir an ounce of pity in my chest. "Dad said you guys were getting a quiet divorce anyway! He said you wanted to sell the house and he just wanted to protect his equity so I could have my loft paid off! He promised it was all legal!"

"Legal?" I let out a dry, humorless laugh that echoed off the high ceilings. "Forging a deed is a federal felony, Chloe. It’s grand larceny. And your father used you as an accomplice because he’s a coward."

"Mom, please!" Chloe lunged forward, reaching for my hands, but I stepped back, letting her fingers grasp empty air. "Dad said everything would be fine! He said he’d take care of us both! Vanessa is just a fling, he told me—she doesn't mean anything!"

"She means enough for him to spend eight thousand dollars on a diamond ring while my name is still on his tax returns," I said, my voice hardening like concrete. "And you mean enough to him to risk a prison sentence just to keep a marketing director happy in a new condo."

My phone buzzed violently on the counter. It wasn't a text. It was a direct emergency alert from our primary bank.

I looked down at the screen, then up at my daughter.

"Tell your father," I whispered, leaning in close so she could hear every syllable, "that his cards are dead, his house is locked, and his little signature trick has been logged with the local precinct. If he wants to talk to me, he can do it through my divorce attorney."
