Chapter 15 - The Daughter's RepentanceLate one rainy Thursday evening, a soft knock echoed at my front door.

I opened it to find Chloe standing on the porch, drenched from the downpour, her designer handbag ruined, her face pale and swollen from hours of crying. She looked like a ghost of the confident young woman who had walked into my kitchen months ago.

"Mom," she whispered, her voice trembling violently. "Please... can I come in?"

I didn't step aside immediately. I looked at my daughter, weighing the depth of her betrayal against the fragile remnants of motherhood.

"You helped your father try to strip me of everything I built," I said, my voice completely devoid of warmth. "You practiced my signature. You lied to my face."

"I know!" Chloe sobbed, dropping to her knees on the welcome mat, burying her face in her hands. "Dad manipulated me! He said you didn't care about us, that you were going to institutionalize him! I was stupid, Mom. I was so arrogant and stupid."

"You are twenty-eight years old, Chloe, not eight," I replied softly, though my chest tightened with a familiar ache. "Consequences aren't punishments; they are reality catching up to choices."

I stepped back, opening the door wide enough for her to cross the threshold, but I didn't offer her a hug.

"You can stay in the guest room for tonight," I said. "Tomorrow, you start therapy. And every single cent your father gave you for your loft apartment is going back into a escrow account to pay off his legal debts. That is the only way forward."
