Richard Lawson stood before the federal judge in an orange jumpsuit, his hair completely white, his posture slumped in defeat. He was given a mandatory sentence of twelve years in federal prison without the possibility of parole, alongside a multi-million-dollar restitution order that stripped away every remaining penny of his hidden retirement funds.
As the bailiffs placed cuffs back on his wrists to lead him away, Richard turned his head toward the gallery and caught my eye for one brief, agonizing second.
There was no anger left in his expression. Only a profound, shattering regret.
