Chapter 16 - The DeadlineBack at the Westchester estate, the digital clock on the study wall ticked relentlessly downward.

11:54 PM.

Elena paced the length of the Persian rug, her hands clasped tightly together, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Dominic stood by the open laptop console, watching the data progress bar connecting to the Zurich server.

“Any word, Dominic?” Elena asked, her voice cracking.

“He’s clear of the penthouse, Mrs. Moretti,” Dominic reported, his fingers flying across the keyboard to prep the system. “He’s syncing the cryptographic drive right now. But the connection is unstable—someone’s trying to firewall us from a terminal in Washington.”

11:58 PM.

The front doors of the estate blew open.

Heavy, hurried footsteps echoed across the marble foyer. Elena gasped and rushed out into the hallway just as Adrian strode through the entrance. His tactical shirt was torn at the shoulder, a smear of dust and blood marked his cheek, but his hand gripped the titanium drive like a trophy.

“Adrian!” she cried out, throwing her arms around his neck.

“I’m okay, Elena. I’m okay,” he breathed, holding her tight for a single second before breaking away and rushing into the study.

He slammed the drive into the master console dock just as the clock hit 11:59 PM.

Dominic hit enter.

A green progress bar flashed across the screen, replacing the red warning countdown with a crisp, clean message: SERVER PURGED. SECURE ENCRYPTION LOCKED.

The room went dead silent.

Dominic let out a long, shaky breath and sank into his chair.

Adrian stood motionless for a moment, then slowly exhaled, pulling Elena back against his chest as the terrifying threat that had hung over their heads finally dissolved into nothingness.
