Chapter 2 - Shadows of the PastThe heavy oak doors of Adrian’s private study remained closed all morning.

Inside, the shattered remains of his mother’s antique clock had been cleared away, leaving an empty, glaring space on the mahogany shelf. But Adrian wasn't looking at the shelf. He was staring at an open manila folder spread across his desk, his gray eyes darkening with every line he read.
Elena Carter. Maiden name: Elena Vance. Father: Thomas Vance, former chief financial officer for the Moretti shipping subsidiaries... executed twenty-five years ago for suspected embezzlement.
Adrian slammed the folder shut, the sound echoing sharply through the quiet room.
He remembered Thomas Vance. He had been a quiet, nervous man who handled the ledger books during the bloodiest transition of Adrian’s early reign. When millions had gone missing from the overseas accounts, Adrian’s father had ordered Vance’s execution to send a message. Adrian, then only a young man being broken into the violent realities of the syndicate, had watched from the doorway as Vance was dragged away.
And now, Thomas Vance’s daughter—disguised under a married name, hiding as a low-level housekeeper—was living inside his home, raising a child under his roof.
Was it a coincidence? Or was it a long-game vengeance?
The secure intercom on his desk buzzed.
“Boss,” Dominic’s voice came through, tense and hurried. “We have a problem at the North River docks. One of our primary container shipments from Antwerp has been flagged by federal customs. And the shipping manifest... it was altered using an internal executive override code.”
Adrian stood up so fast his leather chair rolled backward and crashed against the wood-paneled wall.
“An override code?” Adrian growled. “Only three people in this entire organization possess the master clearance key: me, Salvatore, and…” He stopped.
The blood drained from his face.
“And Thomas Vance before he died,” Dominic finished grimly. “Boss, Elena Carter didn't just stumble into your estate by accident. Someone let her in.”
May you like
Adrian didn't wait for Dominic to finish. He strode out of the study, his long black coat billowing behind him like the wings of a predatory bird. He didn't care about the federal customs agents; he didn't care about the Antwerp shipments.
His entire world had just narrowed down to one objective: finding Elena before Salvatore did.
