Chapter 3 - The Confrontation in the East WingElena was folding linens in the second-floor laundry room when the heavy oak door banged open against the wall so violently that the shelves rattled.

She screamed, dropping a stack of pristine white towels.
Adrian Moretti stood in the doorway. His expression wasn't just cold anymore; it was apocalyptic. The terrifying aura of a mob boss who believed he had been betrayed hung around him like a shroud.
“Mr. Moretti!” Elena stammered, backing away until her spine hit the industrial washing machine. “What is… what are you doing here?”
Adrian closed the distance between them in three long strides, slamming his palm against the metal casing of the washer right beside her head, trapping her.
“Who sent you, Elena?” his voice was a lethal, vibrating hiss.
Elena’s eyes widened in genuine terror. “What? Nobody sent me! I applied through the regular agency—Mrs. Whitfield hired me!”
“Don't lie to me!” Adrian roared, the controlled facade completely shattering. He grabbed the edge of the laundry cart, shoving it aside. “Thomas Vance’s daughter thinks she can sneak into my home, play the innocent victim of a broken clock, and run reconnaissance for a federal sting or a corporate raid?”
Elena’s breath hitched. The color drained entirely from her face, leaving her looking ghostly white. But beneath the terror, something else flared—a fierce, protective anger.
“How… how do you know about my father?” she whispered, her voice trembling violently.
“Because I know every single person who has ever tried to stab my empire in the back,” Adrian snarled, leaning down until his eyes were inches from hers. “You lied on your application. You hid your identity. You’re working inside my house. Why, Elena? Are you here to finish what your father started?”
“My father didn't steal anything!” Elena shouted back, tears of sheer frustration spilling over her eyelashes. She shoved against Adrian’s chest with all her might.
He didn't budge an inch, but the sheer shock of her defiance made him pause.
“He was murdered for a crime he never committed!” Elena sobbed, her voice breaking as the trauma of her childhood came crashing back to the surface. “Your father killed him because he wouldn't sign off on illegal money laundering! I was eight years old when men in suits came to our house and dragged him away! I changed my name so I could survive! So I could keep my daughter safe from monsters like you!”
The laundry room went dead silent.
The heavy hum of the machines seemed to fade into a vacuum. Adrian stared down at Elena, his chest heaving, the accusations dying on his lips.
Before he could speak, a soft click came from the doorway.
They both turned.

Mia stood in the doorway, holding her teddy bear, her big eyes filling with tears as she watched Adrian towering over her crying mother.
“Go away,” Mia whispered, her voice shaking as she stepped forward, putting herself directly between Adrian and her mother. “Leave my mommy alone, bad man.”
