Chapter 17 - The Ashes of BetrayalThree days later, the news broke across national headlines: a massive federal corruption scandal had resulted in the sudden resignation and arrest of several high-ranking Department of Justice officials, effectively dismantling the political shielding that had protected New York’s rival syndicates for decades.

Down in the lower holding cells, the news played quietly on a small portable television screen mounted outside Salvatore Rizzi’s cell.
Salvatore stood glued to the glass, his eyes wide with utter disbelief as he watched the anchor report Director Vance’s perp walk in handcuffs.
The dead-man’s switch hadn't triggered. The empire hadn't burned. Adrian Moretti had beaten them all at their own game.
A heavy pair of footsteps approached the cell.
Adrian Moretti stopped outside the plexiglass. He wasn't wearing a tactical vest or a formal suit; he wore a simple black sweater, looking calm, composed, and untouchable.
“It’s over, Sal,” Adrian said quietly.
Salvatore spun around, slamming his fists against the glass. “You cheated! You shouldn't have survived that penthouse!”

“You forgot the primary rule of survival, old friend,” Adrian replied coldly, his gray-green eyes locking onto the traitor. “A true leader doesn't rely on hidden traps. He relies on the people standing beside him.”
Adrian turned his back on the cell, walking down the dim corridor without looking back, leaving Salvatore to scream into the empty dark.
