Chapter 14 - The Rail Yard Trap

The fog rolled in thick off the river as I pulled my sedan into the gravel lot of the abandoned rail yard. The skeletal frames of rusted freight cars loomed out of the darkness like ancient, forgotten monuments to industrial failure.

I cut the headlights, killed the engine, and stepped out into the damp, biting air. The crunch of gravel beneath my shoes echoed loudly in the cavernous silence.

"Marcus!" I called out, my voice bouncing off the metal walls of a nearby storage container. "I know it's you! Come out and let's settle this like men!"

A slow, mocking chuckle scraped through the darkness from atop a rusted iron staircase attached to an old switching tower.

"Settling things like men, Richard?"

A figure stepped out from the shadows of the tower, descending the metal stairs with slow, deliberate steps. As he moved under the flickering amber glow of a distant security light, his face came into sharp focus.

It wasn't Marcus.

My breath hitched. Standing before me wasn't my former financial analyst. It was a man with broad shoulders, a sharp, cynical smirk, and eyes cold as winter ice: David Cole—senior partner at Harrison & Cole Legal Counsel, the very law firm Claire had hired to rip my life apart five years ago.

"David?" I stammered, stepping back in sheer disbelief. "What... what are you doing here? You're Claire's divorce attorney!"

Cole let out a dry, humorless laugh, pulling a sleek leather folio from beneath his trench coat.

"Correction, Richard: I was Claire's divorce attorney," Cole corrected smoothly, walking toward me with measured strides. "And let me tell you, representing your enraged, betrayed ex-wife was the most lucrative retainer this firm handled all year. But people like you never truly learn your lesson, do you?"

"What are you talking about?" I demanded, my pulse hammering in my throat. "Did Claire send you? Is this some kind of trap to strip away my visitation?"

"Claire doesn't know anything about this," Cole said, stopping ten feet away, his gaze locking onto mine with predatory intensity. "This is strictly freelance work. You see, when I combed through your financial records during the divorce proceedings, I noticed discrepancies—hidden offshore routing codes, untraced corporate bonuses, and secret digital wallets you used to fund your little escapades with Samantha."

My stomach plummeted. "You... you found my hidden accounts?"

"I found a treasure trove of unaccounted-for assets that your legal team was too incompetent to unearth," Cole smiled coldly. "You thought you lost everything, Richard, but you left a breadcrumb trail of digital cryptocurrency transactions that never cleared standard judicial audits. I simply waited for you to rebuild your life, get comfortable, and start breathing again. Then, I decided it was time to collect my own private tax."

"You're blackmailing me," I whispered, the sheer audacity of it staggering my mind. "An officer of the court is shaking me down."

"I'm a pragmatist," Cole corrected smoothly, extending an open hand. "Hand over the cash, sign over the remaining digital wallet keys to my encrypted offshore account, and I'll make sure those audit files stay buried forever. Refuse, and I’ll personally walk into the family court judge's chambers on Monday morning and ensure your daughter never looks at your face again."
