Chapter 25 - The Alliance

The next morning, we met in a secure, neutral location—a corner booth in a quiet library cafe downtown. Claire had spent the entire night cross-referencing my digital ledgers with her own records from the original divorce proceedings, using her background in forensic accounting to connect dots even I had missed.

"The offshore routing numbers match accounts tied directly to a subsidiary firm registered under David Cole’s old law partnership," Claire said, sliding a printed spreadsheet across the table. "Cole wasn't just a corrupt lawyer shaking you down for fifty grand. He was the legal custodian of the corporate slush fund. When he tried to blackmail you at the rail yard, he wasn't just acting on his own accord—he was trying to retrieve the digital keys to the whole operation before the new board found them."

"And when you set the trap with the state police, we blew his cover wide open," I added.

"Which means whoever is left at the top of Sterling's syndicate knows that those keys are floating around," Claire warned, her gaze sharp and focused. "If they find out we have them, they won't just use legal threats next time."

"Then we don't wait for them to find us," I said firmly. "We take the evidence straight to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's white-collar crime division. Today."

Claire looked at me, a complex mixture of hesitation and respect crossing her face. For years, she had viewed me as a weak, self-absorbed coward who folded under the slightest pressure. Seeing me take initiative, risk my own skin, and stand tall to protect our family seemed to rewrite the narrative of who I had become.

"Okay," Claire nodded. "I have a contact at the Department of Justice through my sister’s firm in Atlanta. We compile everything into an encrypted hard drive, walk into the federal building downtown at noon, and hand it over directly."

"Are you sure about this?" I asked, looking at her intently. "Once we walk through those doors, there's no turning back. The people behind this have deep pockets and dangerous reach."

Claire offered a small, resolute smile—the first genuine smile I had seen directed at me in nearly seven years.

"You broke our family, Richard. But you're helping fix this," she said softly. "Let's finish it."
