Chapter 23 - Crossing the Threshold

The locks clicked. The door swung open, revealing Claire standing in the doorway. She wore comfortable linen loungewear, her dark hair falling loosely around her shoulders. Her expression shifted instantly from polite curiosity to sharp, guarded surprise as she recognized my face standing under her porch light.

"Richard?" she asked, her voice dropping an octave, instantly defensive. "What are you doing here? Is something wrong with Hope? Did something happen?"

"No, Hope is fine. She's asleep in her car seat—wait, no, I dropped her off an hour ago," I stammered, raising my hands defensively. "Claire, I'm sorry for showing up unannounced like this. But I need to talk to you. And it's not about custody or visitation."

Claire crossed her arms, leaning against the doorframe, her eyes narrowing. "It’s Sunday night, Richard. Whatever emergency you think you have, it can wait until morning through the app."

"It can't wait," I insisted, my voice thick with urgency. "It's about Samantha."

At the mention of that name, Claire’s entire posture froze. The air between us dropped ten degrees. The memory of the woman I cheated with—the woman whose luxury purchases funded by my joint account had broken Claire’s heart on the bathroom floor—was still a jagged, unhealed wound.

"If you came here to talk about your former girlfriend, you picked the wrong door," Claire said coldly, her hand moving toward the edge of the door to shut it.

"She wasn't my girlfriend, Claire," I blurted out, stepping forward and placing my hand gently against the edge of the door to keep it open. "She was a plant. A corporate operative hired by Sterling’s inner class to entrap me, ruin my career, and force our family apart so I couldn't audit their offshore accounts."

Claire stared at me for three long, agonizing seconds. Then, a sharp, cynical laugh escaped her lips. "Oh, please. Do you honestly expect me to buy that pathetic excuse?" she scoffed, her eyes flashing with sudden fury. "You cheated on me, Richard! You spent thousands of dollars on hotels and diamond bracelets while I was recovering from thirty hours of labor and waking up every ninety minutes to feed our baby! Don't you dare insult my intelligence now by inventing some ridiculous spy thriller to deflect the blame from your own unforgivable selfishness!"

"I am not deflecting!" I raised my voice, the raw agony of the truth bleeding through my words. "Look at the evidence! Why do you think my old boss had those surveillance files ready the exact second I got suspended? Why do you think Cole tried to blackmail me with sealed corporate audits? It was never just about an affair, Claire. They engineered the whole thing to destroy us because I was getting too close to their financial crimes!"

Claire stopped. The raw fury in her eyes flickered, replaced by a sudden, dangerous stillness. She slowly let go of the door, stepping back into the entryway.

"Prove it," she whispered.
