Chapter 15 - The Recording

The cold night air seemed to freeze in my lungs. For a fraction of a second, every instinct screamed at me to surrender—to hand over the cash, sign the keys, and buy another fragile month of peace.
Then I thought of Hope. I thought of her running down the school steps with her light-up sneakers, shouting “Daddy!” with an innocence that no amount of money could ever buy.
If I gave in to Cole now, the extortion would never end. A corrupt lawyer wouldn't stop at fifty thousand; he would bleed me dry until I was broken, homeless, and utterly destroyed.
"I'm not paying you," I said steadily, my voice dropping its panic and hardening into cold resolve.
Cole’s smirk faltered, his eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "You arrogant little fool. You think you have a choice?"
"I don't," I replied calmly, my right hand slowly sliding into my coat pocket. "Which is why I didn't come alone."
Cole’s head snapped up, his eyes darting frantically toward the dark shadows of the freight cars surrounding the lot. "What are you talking about?"
Instead of answering, I pressed a button on my phone, which was resting securely inside my coat pocket, running on speaker mode at maximum volume.
A clear, sharp audio recording began playing back into the damp night air:
“...Hand over the cash, sign over the remaining digital wallet keys to my encrypted offshore account, and I'll make sure those audit files stay buried forever. Refuse, and I’ll personally walk into the family court judge's chambers on Monday morning...”
Cole’s face drained of all color. He lunged forward with blinding speed, attempting to swat the phone from my hand, but I ducked aside, stepping backward into the safety of the shadows.
"You recording son of a bitch—" Cole snarled, lunging again.
Before he could reach me, the quiet darkness of the rail yard exploded into brilliant, blinding white light. Half a dozen high-powered vehicle headlights snapped on simultaneously, illuminating the entire lot like a stadium.
Heavy car doors slammed shut. Footsteps crunched rapidly across the gravel from every direction.
"State police! Nobody move!" a booming voice commanded through a megaphone.
Cole froze dead in his tracks, his hands hovering mid-air as two uniformed state troopers emerged from behind a rusted boxcar, their heavy tactical boots crunching on the gravel, zip-ties ready in their hands.

From behind them, another figure stepped out into the glare of the headlights.
It wasn't a police officer. It was Claire.
