Chapter 2 - The Wake-Up Call

Sunlight cut through the bare windows of the living room the next morning, exposing dust motes dancing in the empty space where our life used to be. I hadn't slept. I sat on the floor with my back against the wall, a cold cup of coffee in my hand—brewed in a coffee maker Claire had thankfully left behind, or perhaps just forgot.
My phone—the spare one I kept for emergencies—buzzed on the floor. It wasn't Samantha. It was an unknown number, followed immediately by an email notification.
It was an official PDF from a prominent local divorce firm: Harrison & Cole Legal Counsel.
I opened the document with trembling fingers. The terms weren't just standard; they were devastating. Claire wasn't asking for a fair split—she was waging total war. She was filing for sole legal and physical custody of Hope, citing abandonment, adultery, and the dissipation of marital assets due to my exorbitant spending on Samantha. Furthermore, a freezing order had already been placed on our joint business accounts and personal savings.
My corporate credit card? Declined. My personal checking account? Locked.
Panic surged through my veins. I grabbed my car keys and sped toward my office downtown. As the senior VP of marketing at a mid-sized tech firm, my life was built on my status, my income, and my control. If my professional circle found out about this mess, my career would implode overnight.
When I walked into the office lobby, the receptionist—usually warm and chatty—barely glanced up.
"Mr. Vance," she said, her voice chillingly professional. "Mr. Sterling wants to see you in his office immediately."
Mr. Sterling was the CEO. My stomach dropped into my shoes.
I walked down the sleek glass-walled corridor, pushing open the heavy mahogany door of the executive suite. Sterling wasn't sitting behind his desk. He was standing by the window, staring out at the city skyline, holding a crisp manila folder that looked identical to the one Claire had left on my kitchen counter.
"Close the door, Richard," Sterling said without turning around.
I swallowed hard, stepping inside and clicking the door shut. "Boss, look, whatever you've heard—"
Sterling turned, his eyes cold and devoid of any warmth. He tossed the folder onto his desk. Photographs spilled out. High-resolution images of me entering a luxury hotel with Samantha, arm in arm, laughing. Images of me handing a shopping bag to her in broad daylight outside a boutique.
"Our primary investor’s foundation focuses heavily on family values and community ethics," Sterling said flatly. "We are up for a multi-million-dollar acquisition deal next month. You have brought a level of reckless, scandalous exposure to this company that we cannot afford."
"It's a private matter—" I started, my voice cracking.

"It was private until your wife’s high-powered legal team served our corporate counsel this morning with a subpoena for your financial records, proving company expense accounts were misused for your paramour," Sterling interrupted, his voice rising in venom. "Effective immediately, you are suspended without pay. Clear your desk by noon."
I stood frozen. In less than twenty-four hours, my wife had dismantled my home, frozen my finances, and now, she had effortlessly pulled the rug out from under my professional empire.
