Chapter 28 - A New Equilibrium

The months that followed brought a sense of peace that felt almost surreal. The tension that had defined our co-parenting relationship for years melted away, replaced by genuine friendship and mutual respect.
We started having Sunday family dinners together—sometimes at my townhouse, sometimes at Claire’s. We would cook dinner, help Hope with her school projects, and sit around the kitchen table laughing about silly stories without the bitter shadow of the past poisoning the room.
One evening in early winter, while washing dishes after dinner at Claire’s house, she handed me a dry towel to dry the plates.
"My sister invited us—all three of us—down to Atlanta for the Christmas holidays," Claire mentioned casually, her back turned as she wiped down the counter.
I paused, holding a ceramic plate in my hands. "Atlanta? You mean... you want me to come too?"
"Elena asked specifically if you were joining us," Claire said, turning around with a slight, knowing smile. "She said Hope would be heartbroken if her father spent Christmas eating frozen microwave dinners alone in his apartment."
A rush of profound gratitude warmed my chest. "I would love that, Claire. More than you know."

"Don't read too much into it," Claire teased lightly, though her eyes were warm. "It’s for Hope’s sake. And... maybe because your turkey recipe is slightly better than mine."
We both laughed—a light, easy sound that would have been unimaginable six years ago, back when the kitchen floor was bare and the manila envelope sat waiting under the kitchen light.
