Chapter 16 - The Truth Unveiled

She wore a dark trench coat, her hair pulled back into a sharp ponytail, her expression an unreadable mask of absolute iron resolve. She walked slowly toward us, her eyes locked entirely on David Cole, who stood paralyzed with his mouth half-open.
"Ms. Vance," Cole stammered, his professional composure completely shattering as reality crashed down around him. "What... what is the meaning of this? This man is dangerous—"
"Save it, David," Claire interrupted, her voice cutting through the damp air like a razor blade. She stopped two feet away from him, looking at the man she had trusted to handle her divorce with profound, icy contempt. "You really thought you were the smartest predator in the room, didn't you? You thought because I was broken and nursing an infant five years ago, I wouldn't notice when my own attorney quietly carved out a secret contingency clause to siphon off unallocated marital assets into a private offshore holding?"
Cole swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. "I... I don't know what you're talking about—"
"My father was a forensic accountant, David," Claire said calmly, stepping closer. "When you handled my divorce, you pushed aggressively for a specific settlement structure—one that left certain digital asset wallets deliberately unaccounted for in the public filings. At the time, I was too exhausted by Richard's betrayal to investigate your legal maneuvering. But two months ago, when suspicious login pings hit my old financial server, I started digging."
She turned her gaze slowly from Cole toward me. For the first time in five years, her eyes held something other than pure, unadulterated hatred. There was a flicker of complex, heavy understanding.
"You knew?" I whispered, my voice trembling. "Claire... you knew about Cole?"
"I figured out that someone was holding a gun to your head when your spending habits suddenly spiked last week and you emptied your savings account for a title loan," Claire said quietly. "Richard, you may be an idiot who destroyed our marriage, but you are not a criminal mastermind capable of orchestrating sophisticated cryptocurrency extortion. When I tracked the IP address routing the blackmail emails to a proxy server linked directly to Cole's private practice... well, it wasn't hard to set a trap."
She looked back at Cole, who stood flanked by two state troopers, his hands now securely bound behind his back with industrial zip-ties.
"Attempted extortion under color of law, obstruction of justice, and unauthorized access to sealed judicial records," one of the troopers announced, shoving Cole roughly toward a squad car. "You're going away for a very long time, counselor."
As Cole was led away into the back of the cruiser, the heavy doors slammed shut with a sickening, final thud. The red and blue emergency lights spun lazily against the rusted metal of the abandoned boxcars, casting long, dancing shadows across the gravel.

Silence settled back over the rail yard, save for the gentle hum of idling police engines.
Claire stood alone under the glaring white beam of a cruiser headlight, looking at me with a weight in her eyes that words couldn't immediately fill.
