Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT BRIEFINGBy 11:00 PM, Emma was seated in the leather-bound swivel chair of a high-rise office overlooking the Manhattan skyline. Across the mahogany desk sat Arthur Pendelton, her family’s veteran corporate attorney and executor of her late father’s estate.

Arthur clicked off the audio recording on his laptop, leaning back with a look of grim satisfaction.

"Well, Emma," Arthur murmured, steepling his fingers. "The assault charge gives us immediate grounds for a freezing order on all marital assets. And this audio file proves corporate fraud and forgery regarding your signature on the share transfer."

"That’s not all, Arthur," Emma said, sliding a weathered, manila envelope across the desk. "Look at the secondary document I found in Nathan’s private office vault."

Arthur opened the envelope and pulled out a yellowed certificate bearing a date from twenty-five years ago—long before Emma’s father supposedly died in a private plane crash off the coast of Maine.

Arthur’s eyes widened behind his glasses. "Good lord. This is a primary birth certificate and medical transfer record... signed by the Swiss Federal Bank."

"My father didn't die in that crash, Arthur," Emma whispered, her hands trembling slightly against her knees. "Or at least... his body was never recovered. And according to this ledger, someone transferred forty million dollars out of his secret Swiss trust account yesterday morning. Someone using Nathan's corporate seal."

Arthur looked up, his face grim. "If your father is still alive, Emma... then the entire foundation of Sterling Enterprises is built on a stolen identity. And Nathan is just a pawn in a much larger game."
