Chapter 1 - The Microphone DropsThe collective intake of breath across the manicured lawn sounded like a sudden gust of wind through dry leaves. Every eye was locked on the stage. Julian stopped dead in his tracks halfway across the travertine pool deck, his designer loafers slipping slightly on the wet stone as panic seized his limbs.

"Julian," I continued into the microphone, my voice echoing off the sprawling glass windows of our custom-built home—a house, I silently reminded myself, that was currently held together by my credit score and sheer willpower. "For the past seven hundred and thirty days, you have treated this household like your personal throne room, and me like your unpaid domestic servant. You sat back while I worked eighty-hour weeks, pumped breastmilk in office supply closets, and paid off your staggering secret debts to prevent us from losing everything."

A murmur rippled through the crowd. I saw Aunt Martha clutch her pearls, and Julian’s boss, a formidable senior partner named Richard Vance, freeze mid-sip of his scotch.

"You laughed tonight," I said, leaning closer to the metallic mesh of the microphone, letting the raw fury bleed into every syllable. "You thought my exhaustion was a joke. You thought my stretch marks and unstyled hair were an invitation for your cruelty. But you forgot one tiny, microscopic detail, my darling husband."

I paused, letting the silence stretch until it felt heavy enough to crush windpipes.

"Every single asset, every bank account, every share of stock, and yes, even the deed to this very estate... is registered exclusively in my name."

Julian let out a choked sound, a desperate, pathetic gasp of air as the full, catastrophic weight of my words slammed into him. The color completely drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse under the festive string lights.

"Happy 40th birthday, Julian," I smiled, a cold, predatory expression that didn't reach my eyes. "Consider this eviction notice your first present."
