Chapter 4 - The Morning After the FallDawn broke over the suburban estate, casting a golden hue across the empty pool where only yesterday inflated swan floats bobbed happily. I stood in the massive walk-in closet, systematically clearing out Julian’s side. His custom suits, his collection of luxury watches left carelessly on the velvet tray, his designer shoes—everything went straight into heavy-duty black trash bags.

A sharp, frantic hammering echoed from the front door downstairs. Bang, bang, bang.

I didn't rush. I finished folding a silk shirt, placed it carefully at the bottom of the bag, and walked down the sweeping hardwood staircase at my own leisurely pace.

Through the frosted glass of the front door, I could see a disheveled silhouette pacing wildly. I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open just enough to reveal the safety chain.

Julian looked like a disaster. His designer linen shirt was stained with grass and sweat, his hair stood up in wild tufts, and his eyes were bloodshot and bulging with unadulterated panic.

"Clara! Open the damn door!" he shrieked, slamming his palm against the wood. "My cards are locked! My car won't start! Some towing company just hooked my BMW out of the street! What the hell is wrong with you?"

I leaned against the doorframe, looking down at him with an expression of supreme, unbothered detachment.

"Good morning, Julian. Did you sleep well on the bench at the local park?" I asked smoothly.

His jaw dropped. "Are you out of your mind? You locked me out of my house? My clothes are in there! My life is in there! You humiliated me in front of the entire executive board, and now you're pulling this psycho stunt?"

"Your life?" I let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Julian, let's establish some basic legal facts before your brain short-circuits completely. This house was purchased using an inheritance from my grandfather, supplemented by my pre-nuptial stock options. Your name was never on the deed. The cars are under my business. The bank accounts are backed by my sweat and tears. You are legally, financially, and practically a guest who overstayed his welcome by roughly twenty-four months."

Julian’s face cycled through a spectrum of colors—from pale white to a furious, apoplectic purple. "I'm your husband! You can't just throw me out like a piece of trash!"

"Watch me," I whispered, and clicked the door shut, sliding the heavy deadbolt home with a satisfying, final click.
