Chapter 6 - The Golden Cage CrumblesTwo weeks flew by in a whirlwind of legal maneuvering, forensic accounting, and sweet, liberating silence. Julian had tried everything—he sent tearful voice notes, threatening text messages, and even enlisted his mother to call my phone day and night demanding an "intervention." I blocked every single number without a second thought.

I was finally sleeping through the night. My skin had cleared up, the lingering postpartum brain fog had completely lifted, and my two children were thriving in a peaceful, stress-free home environment without the constant, toxic friction of a resentful parasite haunting the hallways.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, my phone buzzed with an unknown local number. Expecting another burner phone from Julian, I almost declined it, but curiosity won out.

"Hello?" I answered crisply.

"Clara? Is this Clara Vance?" a sharp, high-pitched female voice snapped through the receiver.

I paused, recognizing the cadence immediately. It was Selina—my former brother-in-law's pristine, "alluring" new bride.

"This is Clara. To what do I owe the absolute displeasure?" I asked, leaning back in my leather office chair.

"You need to call Julian back right now and fix this!" Selina shrieked, the veneer of effortless elegance completely shattered. In the background, I could hear the distinct hum of a cheap motel air conditioner and the blaring sirens of city traffic.

"Fix what, Selina?" I asked mildly, swirling a cup of green tea.

"He’s staying on my pull-out couch in a studio apartment! His cards are maxed out, his car is gone, he has no job, and he hasn't stopped whining about how miserable his life is for two solid weeks! I thought he was a successful executive with deep pockets, not a broke bum living off my meager salary!"

I let out a clear, ringing laugh that echoed off the glass walls of my office. "Oh, darling. You wanted the prize package, didn't you? You spent months drooling over a man who wore expensive suits bought with my money and drove cars leased on my credit. Congratulations—you won the grand prize. He's entirely yours to feed, clothe, and coddle."

"You selfish bitch—!" Selina began to rage.

I cut her off cleanly. "Lose my number before I sue you for accessory to corporate embezzlement. Have a wonderful life."

I tapped the red end call button and blocked her without a single ounce of hesitation.
