Chapter 17 - The Sunset SymphonyA year after the merger, my life had settled into a rhythm of profound, unshakeable joy.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, our sprawling estate was filled not with superficial corporate executives or treacherous fair-weather friends, but with genuine laughter, the patter of tiny running feet, and the rich, mouth-watering aroma of a family barbecue.

Marcus stood by the outdoor grill, laughing as he flipped gourmet burgers while my two children chased each other across the emerald-green lawn, their joyful shrieks echoing into the blue sky.

I sat under the shaded pergola, lounging on a comfortable white wicker sofa with a cold glass of iced lemonade in hand, wearing a flowing floral summer dress that caught the gentle breeze. My skin glowed with vibrant health, my hair was soft and glossy, and my eyes sparkled with authentic, unforced happiness.

My phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was an automated notification from the county clerk’s office regarding public property records. Idly, I tapped it open.

The notice confirmed that Julian’s former family home—the small, decaying mortgage-defaulted house his mother had tried to salvage—had officially been foreclosed and sold off at a public auction to clear his mounting debts. He was now entirely off the grid, drifting through the margins of society as a nameless ghost of his own making.

I locked the screen, placed the phone face down on the table, and didn't give him another thought.

Some people are meant to be permanent fixtures in your life; others are merely harsh winter storms designed to test how deep your roots truly go.

Marcus walked over, handing me a fresh glass of sparkling water before sitting down beside me and wrapping a warm arm around my shoulders. He pressed a gentle kiss to the top of my head.

"Penny for your thoughts, CEO?" he teased softly.

I leaned into his embrace, resting my head against his chest as I watched my children play happily under the golden afternoon sun.
