Chapter 1 - The Weight of Gold

The darkness was not complete—it was a deep, velvet pulse, humming with the sound of a heavy engine and the faint scent of crushed cedar and costly cologne.
Lena opened her eyes. The world did not come back all at once; it assembled itself in fractured pieces. Leather beneath her shoulders. A ceiling lined with dark Alcantara. And a hand—massive, calloused, yet impossibly careful—resting against the side of her neck, thumbs light over her racing pulse.
"Easy," a voice rasped. It was low, carrying the smooth gravel of whiskey poured over crushed glass. "Your blood pressure dropped. Drink."
A crystal flask was pressed gentle against her lips. She took a tiny sip; the liquid burned a track of liquid fire straight to her stomach, instantly cutting through the icy nausea lingering in her chest.
She blinked, focusing on the face suspended above her in the dim interior of the moving Maybach.
It was him. The man from the ballroom with the dark amber eyes and the suit that swallowed the light.
"Who... who are you?" Lena managed to croak, her voice barely a whisper against the hum of the tires on wet asphalt. "Where is Maya?"
"Your photographer friend is currently being compensated twenty thousand dollars for the inconvenience of losing her assistant tonight," the man replied calmly. He did not pull his hand away from her neck. Instead, his thumb brushed softly over her jawline, a gesture that was both possessively tender and terrifyingly cold. "My name is Julian Vance. And as for where you are... you are with me."
"I don't know you," she said, trying to pull back, but the interior of the luxury vehicle offered nowhere to run.
"You don't need to know the ocean to drown in it, little painter," Julian murmured, his amber eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unsettling certainty. "Two years ago, your father signed away a debt he could never pay. He put up a guarantee. Tonight, that guarantee came due."
He leaned down, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, sending an icy shiver straight down her spine.

"You aren't an assistant, Lena. You're collateral."
Chapter Hook: Before she could process the word collateral, the limousine screeched to a halt as a deafening blast shattered the front windshield, showering them in safety glass.
