Chapter 4 - The Ticking Clock

"Maya!" Lena screamed, slamming her hands against the glass monitor.
On the screen, her best friend was bruised and bound, a digital clock overhead rapidly ticking down: 04:52... 04:51...
A masked face appeared on the side feed, speaking through a voice modulator. "You have five minutes, Vance. Bring the Marsh girl to the Brooklyn Docks, Pier 42, or your photographer friend dies on live camera."
"Julian, please!" Lena turned to him, tears streaming down her face, all pride and fear forgotten. "Save her! She has nothing to do with this!"
Julian stared at the screen, his jaw clenched tight enough to break glass. "It's a trap, Lena. They want us out in the open. If we go to Pier 42, we walk into a kill zone."
"I don't care!" she shrieked, grabbing his tactical vest with both hands. "She's the only family I have left! If you don't take me, I'll walk there myself!"
Julian looked down at her small hands gripping his vest, then up at her fiery, terrified eyes. A dark, dangerous expression crossed his face.
"You really don't know what you mean to me, do you?" he whispered, his hand coming up to wrap firmly around the back of her neck. "If I take you out there, I am starting a war with every syndicate in the tri-state area."
"Then start it," she pleaded.
Julian stared into her eyes for three agonizing seconds, then turned to his surviving men standing by the vault door.

"Gear up," Julian ordered, his voice echoing like thunder. "We're burning Pier 42 to the ground."
Chapter Hook: They rushed to the armored SUV, but as Julian opened the door for Lena, his phone buzzed with an anonymous text containing a single photograph: a picture of Julian's father, signed by Lena’s father, dated yesterday.
