Chapter 5 - The Deception

The drive to the Brooklyn Docks was a blur of high speed and deafening silence. Lena couldn't stop looking at Julian. His face was rigid, his eyes fixed on the rain-slicked highway, but the text message he had received had changed the atmosphere inside the car entirely.
"Your father died two years ago," Julian spoke suddenly, his tone icy. "That's what the police report said. Car crash off the Hudson."
"He did," Lena said, her heart hammering. "I went to the funeral. I identified the... I identified what was left."
"Then explain why I just received a photo of him sitting in a cafe in Geneva, taken four hours ago," Julian said, casting a sharp, terrifying glance at her.
Lena froze. "What? No... that's impossible. I saw the documents!"
"Your father didn't put you up as collateral to pay a debt, Lena," Julian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as the SUV pulled into the darkened shadows of Pier 42. "He staged his death, sold your location to the Castillos, and used my protection over you as a distraction while he stole eighty million from my private accounts."
The realization hit her like a physical blow. The debt, the party, the kidnap attempt—it wasn't a tragedy. It was a setup orchestrated by her own blood.
"I didn't know," she choked out, terror choking her throat. "Julian, I swear to you, I thought he was dead!"
Julian looked at her, his amber eyes searching her pale, trembling face in the dark cab. Before he could speak, the back window of the SUV blew out as sniper fire ripped through the metal frame.
