Chapter 3 - Shadows and Secrets

"Don't move, boss," a cold voice whispered in the dark behind Lena.
It was Marcus, Julian’s top lieutenant—the man who had been flanking him at the party. But the muzzle of his gun wasn't pointing at the doors; it was pressed firmly into the nape of Lena’s neck.
"What are you doing, Marcus?" Julian’s voice turned dangerously quiet, dangerously calm.
"The Castillos offered fifty million for the girl, Julian," Marcus said with a dark chuckle in the gloom. "The syndicate is crumbling. We all know it. Handing her over saves the rest of us."
Lena held her breath, the steel barrel freezing against her skin.
"You spent ten years at my side, Marcus," Julian said, his voice echoing through the vast dark hall. "You should know by now... I don't negotiate with dead men."
A flash of orange light illuminated the hall for a fraction of a second—a silenced gunshot from Julian's hand. Marcus gasped, dropping his weapon as he crumpled to the marble floor.
Emergency red lights kicked on, bathing the foyer in a blood-red wash. Julian stepped over his former lieutenant without a backward glance, reaching out and grabbing Lena’s wrist, pulling her toward a hidden door behind a bookcase.
"Is everyone trying to kill me?" she sobbed, stumbling behind him down a narrow stone staircase leading deep beneath the estate.
"No," Julian replied without looking back. "They're trying to buy you or kill you. I'm the only one trying to keep you alive."
"Why?" she demanded, yanking her arm back as they reached a subterranean vault lined with surveillance monitors and weapons caches. "Why do you care?"
Julian turned slowly, trapping her against the steel table in the center of the room. "Because two years ago, before your father died, he didn't just owe me money. He gave me something far more binding."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, worn leather sketchbook. Lena gasped—it was her personal sketchbook from her freshman year at NYU, the one that had vanished from her apartment eighteen months ago.

"He traded your freedom for his life," Julian said softly, tracing the painted cover. "And I've been watching you ever since."
